NEW HAVEN, CT (February 3, 2018) – The Vassar College men's fencing team traveled to New Haven, CT Saturday to take on Yale University in action from the Yale Fencing Salon, looking to knock off the Bulldogs, who are receiving votes in the CollegeFencing360.com Top 10 poll. Vassar led 13-12 late, but couldn't capture the win as VC dropped a 14-13 heartbreaker.
Vassar's sabre team was strong on Saturday, as freshman
Evin Heintz posted three victories including a nice 5-2 win over 2017 NCAA qualifier Walter Musgrave. He also picked up 5-1 defeats to earn the unblemished day, while senior
Eli Polston was 2-1 for Vassar as well.
In epee, the Brewers earned three victories, as
Jonathan Alperstein,
Michael Jaklitsch and
George Whiteside all picked up wins for the Brewers. In foil, the two teams had earned three wins apiece going to the final round of fencing. Senior
Tom Racek started that with a victory to put VC up 4-3, needing just one more bout win to earn the victory. The host Bulldogs were just too tough though, eking out the 5-4 weapon win to clinch the match.
Vassar will head to Smith College next weekend for the final day of Northeast Fencing Conference, battling the University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College, Boston University, Sacred Heart University and the University of Massachusetts starting at 10 a.m. in Southampton, MA.
