Hopkins Tops Men's Fencing Twice Saturday

BALTIMORE, MD (February 17, 2018) -- The Vassar College men's fencing team traveled to the Charm City on Saturday afternoon to take on Johns Hopkins University for a pair of dual matches in Newton White Athletic Center, dropping both rounds with identical scores of 17-10.

In the first round, Johns Hopkins barely edged the Brewers in sabre, as the Brewers won three straight bouts to make the score 4-4 after trailing 4-1. Freshman Evin Heintz started the comeback with a 5-2 win over Brian Huang, followed by senior Eli Polston topping Jacob Desman 5-1. Sophomore Graeme Mills kept the run going with a 5-1 triumph over Huang, and Heintz shutout Desman 5-0 to tie the score at four bouts apiece. In the final round, Sandy Vingoe was able to earn the clinching win over Polston.

The Vassar foil team dropped its decision 6-3 to the Blue Jays, but freshman Adlai Brandt-Ogman posted a pair of victories, while sophomore Michael Skolnick also earned a bout win for the Brewers. VC's epee team was also bested 6-3, but freshmen Abram Gregory and Michael Jaklitsch, along with sophomore Roman Guglielmo, were each 1-2 on the round.

In the second of the back-to-back matches with JHU, Vassar's sabre team earned the 5-4 victory thanks to the 2-1 records from both Heintz and Polston. The two teams were deadlocked in sabre 3-3 after the first two rounds, but Mills earned a 5-3 win over Desman, and Heintz knocked off Huang 5-0 to pick up the weapon win.

JHU eked by the Brewers in the second match in epee, as Gregory started the round with a victory. Jaklitsch started the second set of bouts with a 5-2 victory, and Gregory followed that with a 5-1 triumph to make the score 3-2. In the final round, Guglielmo was victorious with a 4-3 scoreline, but JHU earned a tight 5-4 win to claim the weapon win. The difference was in foil, as the Blue Jays went 8-1 though Skolnick earned a 5-3 in the first bout of the round.

Vassar will stick around in Baltimore tomorrow to cheer on the women's team at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference Championships, and will travel to Mount Holyoke College next weekend for the NEIFC Championships next weekend.
