Vassar Opens Season With Win Over Brandeis

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. –
In its first meet of the 2018-19 season, the Vassar College women's swimming & diving team notched a 168-98 victory over Brandeis at Kresge Pool on Saturday afternoon.  Five different Brewers won two events apiece, with including Jesse Ecklund's (Missoula, MT) facility record in the 200 yard backstroke.
 
Ecklund's time of 2:06.99 in the 200 backstroke was nearly two seconds faster than the previous record.  She also won the 100 backstroke in 59.40 seconds and swam the leadoff leg on the victorious 200 medley relay squad.  Shannon Schrope (Kinnelon, NJ), who was the second swimmer in the 200 medley relay, took first in both breaststroke events.  Her winning time in the 100 breaststroke was 1:09.61, while she notched a 2:32.46 clocking in the 200 breaststroke.
 
Brynn Lautenbacher (Dunwoody, GA) anchored the 200 medley relay team before earning a pair of individual victories in the 100 and 200 butterfly.  She led a 1-2-3 sweep in the 100 butterfly with a time of 59.32 seconds, and her winning effort in the 200 butterfly was 2:14.73.
 
Kendall Hayes (Baltimore, MD) and Sammy Stone (Wake Forest, NC) also won two events apiece.  Hayes took first in the 200 freestyle (2:03.13) and 500 freestyle (5:25.72), while Stone was victorious in both the 100 freestyle (56.14) and 1000 freestyle (11:16.91).  Violet Witchel (Durango, CO), meanwhile, completed a sweep of the freestyle events by posting a time of 26.25 seconds to earn the victory in the 50 freestyle. 
 
Hannah Zawacki (San Jose, CA) compiled 137.90 points in the 1-meter diving competition, and Ellie Kennedy-Wood (Oak Park, IL) was the fourth member of the winning 200 medley relay squad.  Vassar also had seven second-place finishes, with Stephanie Kaplan (Bellmore, NY) placing second in three different events (50 freestyle, 200 freestyle, 100 breaststroke).  Angharad Healey (Summit, NJ), meanwhile, had a second- (200 butterfly) and a third-place (500 freestyle).
 
The Brewers, who wore pink caps on Saturday in support of Vassar's "Think Pink" initiative for breast cancer awareness, visit Bard at 6 p.m. on Friday for their first road meet of the season.
