Vassar College Men's Fencing Notes - Yale

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 31, 2018) – The Brewers are on the road this weekend, traveling to New Haven to take on the Bulldogs of Vassar's one-time brother institution Yale University. Vassar went 2-3 at the Northeast Fencing Conference Round Robin, hosted by Boston College in their last time out on January 28, and will look to come back with a stronger result against the Bulldogs.

Last Time Out: The Brewers went 2-3 at the NFC Round Robin, scoring victories over MIT and Tufts University, but dropping to Boston College, Brandeis University, and Brown University in their final three matches of the day. The Brewers were paced by Eli Polston in sabre, who led the team with nine bout victories, while squad mate Graeme Mills picked up seven wins. Senior Jonathan Alperstein also earned nine wins in epee, with Tom Racek collecting nine bout victories for the foil squad.
 
A Look At The Brewers (19-12): 
 
  • The Brewers will look to its sabre team this weekend to stand out as it has all season, as VC has a 174-101 record in the weapon in 2017-18.
  • Vassar's sabre crew has been led by Evin Heintz, who has 57 total bout victories, and Eli Polston, whose strong showing last week saw him go 3-0 against both MIT and Tufts, bringing his win total to 40 on the season.
  • Other standouts from the sabre squad include sophomore Graeme Mills with 33 wins on the season, and senior Eric Lee with 20 wins as a reserve for VC.
  • The foil team comes into this weekend 148-124, led by Tom Racek's 46 wins on the season after going 9-5 this weekend, followed closely by Noe Berger and his 38 bout victories this year as a sophomore.
  • Vassar's strong epee squad had the best showing at last week's competition, posting 23 wins, led by senior 2017 NCAA Championships qualifier Jonathan Alperstein with nine wins on the day and 40 wins on the season.
  • First-year Michael Jaklitsch's 44 wins and Daniel Swerzenski's 38 have also contributed to a strong campaign in 2017-18 for the Brewers' epee team.
  • Vassar will look to build on their season progress this weekend against a tough opponent, as Yale is receiving votes for the NCAA top ten.
 
A Look At The Competition: 
 
  • Yale is coming into the weekend off a 3-1 win at the University of Pennsylvania, triumphing over UNC, Brown and Drew, and falling only to NYU.
  • Sophomore foil fencer Aiden Ahn broke a tie between UNC and Yale, securing the win for the Bulldogs over the Tar Heels. Both Ahn and fellow foil fencer Daniel Flesch swept the UNC and Drew squads.
  • Junior epee fencer Jonathan Xu was undefeated in Yale's last competition.
  • The Bulldog sabre squad of Arthur Befumo, Walter Musgrave, Sam Rooney, and Samuel South lost only one bout, to their opponents from Brown. 
 
Up Next: Vassar will take on NFC opponents University of New Hampshire, Dartmouth College, Boston University, Sacred Heart University, and the University of Massachusetts on the road in Southampton, MA, next Saturday, February 10, starting at 10 a.m.
