POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 27, 2018) – The Vassar College women's swimming & diving team posted some strong individual performances against a stout Pace University team, but fell Saturday to their Division II opponent 163-132 from Kresge Pool.
The Brewers chalked up three personal bests on Saturday, while establishing seven new season best scores as well. Freshman
Angharad Healey posted a new career-best in the 1000 freestyle, as she swam a 11:01.44 in the event, while senior diver
Katie Nordstrom also posted a new personal best in the 1-meter event with 140.90 points.
Vassar started the afternoon with a victory in the 200 medley relay, as VC chalked a 1:52.78 thanks to a freshman quartet of
Rhea Randhawa,
Shannon Schrope,
Brynn Lautenbacher and
Stephanie Kaplan. In the 1000 free, Vassar saw junior
Sammy Stone finish second with a season-best of 11:00.51, followed closely by Healey and her new personal best.
The 200 freestyle saw junior
Kael Ragnini finish second after swimming a 2:04.26, and Randhawa followed that up with a 1:01.08 in the 100 back for Vassar's first individual win of the afternoon. Sophomore
Abby Kirsch posted a new season-best in the 100 backstroke, booking a 1:12.44.
Junior
Hayley Schultz collected a win for the Brewers in the 100 breaststroke, as she swam a 1:08.77, and Healey finished second in the 200 fly with a 2:16.58. Freshman
Ellie Kennedy-Wood was just behind her in third place with a 2:25.86 in the 200 fly, while Lautenbacher earned second place in the 50 freestyle after swimming a 25.65.
In the 1-meter diving event, Vassar was competing against a very strong pair of Setter divers, but the Brewers still posted strong scores. Senior
Nora Kyrkjebø finished with a season-best 231.80, while junior
Hannah Zawacki also set a new personal best with a 145.20.
After the diving break, Kaplan took second place in the 100 freestyle after recording a 57.05, followed by a 2-3 finish in the 200 backstroke. Randhawa was second with a 2:10.06, and Healey established a season-best with a 2:16.28. Schrope earned a wins for the Brewers in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:30.17, followed closely by Schultz in second place with a 2:31.87.
Stone returned to the pool to edge out Madison Kiefer of Pace by 0.13 seconds to earn the win in the 500 freestyle, and Lautenbacher swam a season-best in the 100 butterfly to finish with the 59.39 as the lone competitor under a minute. In the 3-meter diving event, Kyrkjebo posted a season-best total of 244.10 to take third-place, diving well having been back on the boards for a little over a month after over 18 months away.
The Brewers would go 2-3 in the 200 IM after the second diving break, as Randhawa chalked up a 2:16.62 for second place while senior
Emily McDaniels was third with a 2:25.70. In the final swim of the day, Vassar's "A" relay in the 400 free relay finished with a 3:52.13 thanks to the efforts of Stone, Ragnini, Kaplan and Lautenbacher.
Vassar will get a week off before honoring its five seniors in
Madison Carroll,
Cali Corbett, Nordstrom, Kyrkjebo and McDaniels Saturday, February 3 at 1 p.m. for the Vassar Sprint Invitational in Kresge Pool.
