PALO ALTO, CA (January 14, 2018) -- The Vassar College women's fencing team traveled across the country to compete in the 2018 Western Invitational, picking up wins over CalTech (21-6), the University of Florida (14-13) and the University of the Incarnate Word (17-10) in action from Stanford University. VC dropped decisions to the University of California at San Diego, host Stanford, Air Force Academy and Northwestern University Sunday.
The Vassar College sabre team was strong the entire day, winning three of its seven squad outcomes. Leading the way for the Brewers on Sunday was senior
Annie Innes-Gold, as she finished with a team-best 14 victories. Innes-Gold picked up two wins against UCSD, followed by taking all three bouts against Stanford University. She then followed that up with three wins apiece against CalTech, FLorida and UIW. Squad partners
Lilia Hutchinson and
Nicoletta Dinelli each finished with five victories apiece.
In foil, the Brewers were paced by the seven total victories from junior
Mirit Rutishauser, including sweeping the Cardinals of Incarnate Word in the final match of the day. She also posted two wins in the 14-13 win over Florida. Senior
Zoe Morgan added seven total victories including two forfeit wins for VC, while
Isabella Migani finished the day with a 3-0 mark against ICW.
In epee, Vassar was led by
Shannon Chen and her four bout wins, as she picked up two wins apiece again California Institute of Technology and Florida. Migani moved over from foil to pick up three epee wins for Vassar, including two against nationally-ranked Northwestern University. Freshman
Hannah Gaven added three wins as well for the Vassar epee squad.
The Brewers will now focus on their first day of Northeast Fencing Conference action Sunday, January 28 at Boston College.
