POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 13, 2018) – The Vassar College women's swimming & diving team returned to dual meet action on Saturday afternoon, hosting both Trinity College and Mt. Holyoke College in a tri-meet in Kresge Pool. The Brewers swam well all day in their first action of the semester after a training trip to Florida, earning a 185-113 win over Trinity while topping Mount Holyoke 211.5-84.5.
VC started the afternoon by winning the 200-yard medley relay with a 1:51.71, as freshmen
Rhea Randhawa,
Ellie Kennedy-Wood and
Brynn Lautenbacher joined junior
Hayley Schultz to finish first. Vassar's "B" relay of
Sarah Boese,
Emily McDaniels,
Shannon Schrope and
Meg Harrington were third with a 1:59.24. In the "C" relay,
Madison Carroll posted a 32.12 split in the back, which was her best 50 back split this year, over eight percent faster than her previous best.
In the first individual swim of the day, junior
Kael Ragnini was spectacular in the 1000 free, as she helped Vassar to a 1-2 finish with a season-best time of 11:06.62. Freshman
Angharad Healey was right behind her with an 11:08.06 in second place, while senior
Cali Corbett was fifth with a season-best effort of 11:52.86.
In the 200 free, junior
Sammy Stone competed in her first competitive race of the season after being abroad the opening semester. Stone got right back to her winning ways, taking the top spot in 2:02.57, while teammate
Stephanie Kaplan was just behind her in second place with a 2:04.64 to add four more points to VC's ledger.
Also in the 200 free, McDaniels posted a 2:11.30, just off her season-best time, while
Margaret Reisert swam a 2:30.18. In the 100 backstroke, Randhawa was second with a 1:00.67, while Boese was fourth with a 1:08.38. The 100 breaststroke saw another 1-2 finish for the Brewers, as Schrope posted a collegiate-best for the win in 1:08.62. Schultz was just behind her with a 1:09.21, while sophomore
Abby Kirsch swam a 1:20.36.
In the 200 butterfly, VC earned yet another individual win as Healey posted her first win of the day with a 2:16.81, over two seconds better than her previous season-best time of 2:19.09. The 50 free saw the first of Lautenbacher's three individual wins on Saturday, as the freshman won the sprint in 25.60, with Kaplan finishing fourth with a 26.92.
In the 100 freestyle, Lautenbacher won her second consecutive race after the break, as she zoomed to a 56.18 and the win. Vassar would go 1-2-3 in the event, as Kaplan was second with a 57.43, while Stone took third in 57.58. Junior
Meg Harrington also earned points for Vassar with a 59.54 for fifth place.
The 200 backstroke saw Randhawa finish second after swimming a 2:09.69. while Boese was fifth after posting a 2:26.43. McDaniels swam a season-best time in the event with a 2:29.88. The 200 breast saw VC again take the two top positions, as Schultz and Schrope switches spots from the 100 breast with the junior taking the win. Schultz swam a 2:30.97, with Schrope touching in with a 2:32.20.
Ragnini posted her second victory of the day in the 500 free, as she continued her strong swimming with a season-best time of 5:27.19. Stone was second with a 5:31.76 in the 500 free, while Corbett was fifth with a 5:47.87 to win her heat.
In the 100 butterfly, Lautenbacher returned to the pool to capture her third individual win of the day, posting a collegiate-best time of 1:00.19. Kennedy-Wood was third with a 1:04.18, while Healey followed her in with a personal-best 1:04.36 for fourth place. In the final solo event of the day, Randhawa picked up a win in the 200 IM with a 2:17.06, while Schrope was third with a 2:25.16.
In the 400 free relay to finish the day, Vassar pulled away for a four-second win over Trinity, as Kaplan, Ragnini, Schultz and Stone registered a 3:51.22 victory. All four swimmers were within 0.61 seconds of each other for their 100 yard splits, led by the 57.58 from anchor swimmer Stone.
In diving, Vassar had a strong showing from its contingent of three on the planks in the 1-meter event. Senior Nora Kyrkjebø was third in her first diving meet since her sophomore season with 220 points, while newcomer
Hannah Zawacki competed in her first meet since her junior year of high school and posted 127.85 points for a personal-best. Senior
Katie Nordstrom just missed her collegiate best, as she finished with 104.45 points.
In the 3-meter event, Kyrkjebø was third with 209.60 points to lead the way for the Brewers. Vassar will have a few days off before traveling to Mount Holyoke College next weekend for the 2018 Seven Sisters Championships Saturday and Sunday.
