Last Time Out: The Brewers earned a pair of Liberty League wins to start the season, as VC knocked off Union College 8-1 before dispatching of Bard 9-0. Two sophomores and two freshmen each went 2-0 in singles play, while the young Brewer squad also went undefeated in all six doubles matches for the day.
A Look At The Brewers (2-0, 2-0 Liberty):
- Vassar was strong throughout the lineup during its opening day of the season, led by sophomore Allen Sokolov picking up a pair of wins at the No. 1 position. He also teamed with Nicolas Demaria for two wins at No. 3 doubles.
- Freshman Adam Krueger slotted into the second position, winning both singles' matches by 6-1, 6-1 score lines. Krueger played No. 1 doubles, as he partnered with Jeremy Auh for two more victories.
- After playing No. 5 as a freshman, Auh jumped up to No. 3 in the Vassar lineup, chalking up his seventh and eighth career wins against Union and Bard. With the victories, Auh is now 9-9 in his career.
- Sophomore Zamir Birnbach picked up a single victory in the opening day of action, and is now 6-2 in singles play since joining the team last year.
- Newcomer David Gandham played No. 5 for the Brewers against Union and Bard, earning a pair of straight set victories. Gandham also chalked up two doubles triumphs, as partner Nick Zuczek and himself cruised to 8-4 and 8-0 wins.
- Over the last four seasons, Vassar has fared much better at home than on the road. Since 2014-15, VC has gone 14-6 in home matches while posting a 12-22 road mark.
- Of the seven players on the squad that have played singles for the Brewers, all but one player has a .500 record or better.
- VC is still an inexperienced team, boasting no seniors along with just one junior this fall season, as Jamie Anderson, Nick Lee and Robin Drummond are abroad this semester. Allen Sokolov is VC's most seasoned player as a sophomore with 24 singles bouts.
A Look At The Ephs (0-0):
- Williams comes into the season with five new faces to a squad that ranked No. 12 to finish the 2016-17 season.
- The Ephs have the No. 3 ranked Division III recruiting class coming in this season, led by five-star recruit and national freshman of the year candidate, Austin Barr out of Chagrin, Ohio.
- Williams also has a four-star recruit in Calvin Chung, who comes to Williams as the 103rd best recruit in last year's 2017 class.
- Brian Grodecki is back after being part of one of the nation's best doubles pairings last season, while Williams also returns three sophomores to the fold. Partner Alex Taylor also returns this season.
- Head coach Dan Greenberg is entering his ninth season as the head coach of the Ephs, as he has led his team to a pair of NCAA Final Fours.
