Vassar Men's Volleyball Notes - Nazareth, No. 8 NYU

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (March 8, 2017) – The No. 6 Brewer men's volleyball team will have a challenging doubleheader this Saturday against Nazareth College and No. 8 NYU at 11 a.m. and 4 p.m., respectively.

A Look at the Brewers (16-6, 3-0 UVC)
  • Vassar held off No. 9 Marymount University last Wednesday 3-2, earning the teams fourth straight win in a row.
  • The Brewers are now 3-0 in UVC conference play, good enough for second in the league.
  • Returning All-American Matt Knigge continues to demonstrate his dominance on the court, earning 202 kills thus far in the season, averaging 2.53 kills per set.
  • Aces keep dropping for Juniors Zechariah Lee and Matt Knigge, each earning 31 service points this season. Zechariah, with 142 aces, is currently one ace short from setting the school record of 143 aces set by Evan Frederickson ('11).
  • Seniors Christian Lizana and Trey Cimorelli have been exceptional defensively, both tabbing 10 digs during Wednesday's game against No. 9 Marymount. Trey Cimorelli is currently only one of two Brewers to have a career dig total above 1000. He currently averages 2.78 digs per set this season.
  • Working on both sides of the ball, Matthew Knigge also currently leads the team in total blocks with 108 and blocks per set with 1.35.
  • Freshmen Yoni Auerbach, despite his youth, has been an incredible performer on the court this season, starting in 14 of 18 matches and earning 98 kills during his rookie career.
  • Sophomore George Diehl continues to be a powerhouse in the Brewer offense playing in 72 of 80 sets this season and earning a formidable 149 kills.

A Look at the Golden Flyers (16-8, 2-1 UVC)
  • Nazareth will look to extend their four-game win streak this weekend after taking down Elmira in 3 sets last Wednesday
  • The Golden Flyers 2-1 record in the UVC is good enough to earn the third place spot in the league
  • Sophomore Zachary Gillard continues to have an incredible season, tabbing 271 kills, nearly 120 more than the second leader in the category. He averages 3.27 kills per set and is hitting 0.29% overall.
  • Nazareth plays this season have run through Junior Jake Kemp who has 742 helpers and averages 9.51 assists per set
  • Freshmen Sean Dillon has been asserting his presence on the defensive side of things, leading his team with 56 blocks and averaging 0.92 blocks per set.
  • Seniors Kane Wittorff and Tom Keisling provide excellent experience for the Golden Flyers. Both have currently played over 80 sets and rank 2 and 3 on the team for number of kills, respectively.
  • Sophomore Tyler Farnung leads the team in service aces with 31 to his name on the season
  • Tom Keisling works well offensively and defensively, leading the team in both digs with 132 and digs per set with 1.93

A Look at the Violets (10-6, 4-0 UVC)
  • The Violets are coming off a sweep of Arcadia University, a solid rebound after losing a pair of matches in Arlington the previous day.
  • Freshmen Alex Li currently leads the team in both kills with 189 and kills per set with 3.71, good enough to lead the UVC
  • Senior Derrick Chiu is a strong player in the NYU attack with 443 helpers, averaging 9.04 assists per set
  • Freshmen Evan Lindley has been a major presence defensively earning 26 blocks and averaging 0.5 blocks per set
  • Defensive specialist Connor Keowen, leads the team with digs with 117, earning 2.02 digs per set
  • Junior Andrew Zhu had an exceptional game against Arcadia, earning nine kills, three aces, and two digs during the game
  • NYU is currently ranked third in hitting percentage and blocks per set in the UVC with 0.264 and 1.89 respectively
  • Freshmen Neil Ferraro currently ranks in the top 10 of the UVC for Blocks per set with 0.86.

Up Next: The Brewers travel away for the first time in seven games to Marymount University for a re-match on March 24 at 6 p.m.
