POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 3, 2017) – The Vassar College women's fencing team hosted some of the nation's best collegiate programs Sunday for the 2017 Traditional Multi-Meet, and senior sabre fencer
Annie Innes-Gold was up to the task as she was superb all day for the Brewers.
As a team, Vassar was unable to pick up a victory on the afternoon, dropping all seven matches to five teams in the CollegeFencing360.com Top 10 Women's Fencing poll. The Brewers started the day with a 24-3 loss to No. 7 Harvard University, followed by a 19-8 loss to Sacred Heart in the second round. In the third round, Vassar fell to No. 6 University of Pennsylvania 24-3, followed by another 24-3 defeat to No. 3 Princeton University.
Vassar would finish the day with defeats to No. 4 Penn State University (25-2), No. 8 Temple University (25-1) and New York University (23-4). The story though for the Brewers was the standout fencing from Innes-Gold, who went 15-6 on the day against some of the best in the sport. The senior started the day with three wins against the Crimson, knocking off 2017 NCAA qualifier Gabby Tartakovsky 5-3 to start the day.
She would follow that with another perfect round against Sacred Heart, allowing just five total touches in the round. Against the University of Pennsylvania, Innes-Gold finished with two victories, and then chalked up two against Penn State later in the day. The senior would finish the afternoon with an undefeated round against New York University, moving to an impressive 53-7 in dual meet bouts this year.
Along with Innes-Gold, junior
Mirit Rutishauser chalked up five wins on the afternoon, going an impressive 3-0 against Sacred Heart University. In epee,
Shannon Chen posted a win over Princeton University while VC also got sabre wins from
Nicoletta Dinelli and
Lilia Hutchinson against SHU. Freshman
Breanna Piercy added a foil win against NYU to finish the day for Vassar.
The Brewers will be back in action after the semester break traveling to Silicon Valley and Palo Alto, California for the Western Invitational, hosted by Stanford University January 14.
