SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (November 4, 2017) – Things continued to shake out well for the Vassar College women's swimming and diving team, as the squad moved to 3-0 on the season thanks to a decisive 165-127 dual meet win over Skidmore College in action from Williamson Sports Center Saturday.
The Brewers started the afternoon with a big 13-point race in the 200-yard medley relay, going 1-2 as the Vassar "A" relay of Rhea Randhawa, Shannon Schrope, Brynn Lautenbacher and
Hayley Schultz swam a time of 1:54.80. The Vassar "B" relay was able to sneak in front of the Skidmore top relay team to take second, swimming a 1:59.57 thanks to sophomore
Sarah Boese, junior
Meg Harrington and freshmen Ellie Kennedy-Wood and Stephanie Kaplan.
In the 1000 freestyle, junior
Kael Ragnini battled early through the race with Skidmore's Elizabeth Levy but would pull away late to swim a season-best time of 11:13.83 to take the victory. The time was 1.9 percent better than her previous season-best time. Senior
Cali Corbett also swam a season-best time of 12:05.99.
In the 200-yard freestyle, Randhawa finished second with a 2:04.46 while senior
Emily McDaniels swam a solid 2:15.80 in the event to take third place for a valuable three points. In the 100 backstroke, Boese registered a 1:07.85 for second place, and
Abby Kirsch chalked up a 1:13.15.
One of the biggest finishes of the day for the Brewers came in the 100 breaststroke, as Schultz earned the win while Schrope and Kaplan helped VC go 1-2-3. Schultz posted a time of 1:12.75 to nip Schrope, who registered a 1:12.75. Kaplan touched the wall in 1:13.39 for Vassar.
In the 200 butterfly, Vassar picked up another win thanks to Angharad Healey, who led from start to finish to tally a 2:19.09. In the 50 free, Lautenbacher led a Vassar contingent that picked up 14 points in the event, as she won the race with a 25:89. Harrington finished third with a 27.87, with Ragnini taking fourth place in 28.34.
In the 100 freestyle, Schultz finished second with a 59.23, while Harrington touched the wall with a 1:00.63 and Corbett swam a season-best time of 1:01.62. Randhawa swam a controlled race to take the top spot in the 200 backstroke, booking a 2:15.76, while Boese was third with a 2:23.66.
Schrope returned to the water in the 200 breast and continued to stand out for the Brewers, as she won the event after swimming a 2:35.94. McDaniels clocked a season-best time of 2:47.68 in the event as well. Healey doubled her win total in the 500 free, earning a collegiate best after swimming a 5:25.89, a 1.3 percent improvement on her previous best time. Ragnini was right behind Healey with a 5:30.30, just missing a season-best time as well.
The wins continued to come as Lautenbacher earned another victory in the 100 butterfly, chalking up a 1:00.34 for a season-best time. Kennedy-Wood was right behind her with a 1:02.80 for second place. The 200 IM saw VC go 1-2 one more times, as Randhawa earned the win with a 2:19.71, while Kennedy-Wood was second again with a 2:24.00.
The final highlight of the day for the women's team came in the 400 free relay, as many swimmers posted season-best 100 free splits. Vassar's "A" relay picked up the win with a 3:52.90, led by the 55.45 split from Lautenbacher.
On the diving side, Vassar senior newcomer Katie Nordstrom continued to make progress, as she upped her personal best score for the third consecutive meet with a 99.53 in the 1-meter event.
Vassar will now look to move to 4-0 on the season next weekend at RPI for a 1 p.m. dual meet in Troy, NY.
