PLEASANTVILLE, NY (January 25, 2017) – Senior co-captain and two-time All-American
Julia Cunningham won all three of her races Wednesday, and sophomore
Hayley Schultz also earned a win as the Vassar College women's swimming and diving team dropped a non-conference dual meet to Division II Pace University 162-101.
Cunningham, who was recently named as the ECAC and Liberty League Swimmer of the Week, followed up a strong performance at the Seven Sisters Championships with three more wins Wednesday. The senior won her first race in the 200 butterfly, swimming a 2:07.24, winning by over 13 seconds. She followed that up by winning the 100 fly, getting under a minute with a 59.57, while taking the 200 IM with a time of 2:13.40.
In the 200 breaststroke, Schultz secured the win thanks to a strong swim of 2:39.35, posting a season-best time. Earlier in the meet, Schultz took second in the 100 breaststroke, getting out-touched at the wall after posting a 1:13.68.
The Vassar 200 medley relay took second to start the meet, swimming a 2:00.36. Freshman
Sarah Boese started the race with a 32.36, followed by Schultz in the breaststroke, Cunningham in the fly and sophomore
Meg Harrington swam the anchor in the free. In the 1000 free, sophomore
Kael Ragnini was second with a 11:18.13, and junior
Cali Corbett took fourth in the 200 free with a 2:11.97. The time for Corbett was just off her season-best time in the 200 of 2:11.94.
In the 100 backstroke, Boese took third but was strong in her effort, swimming a 1:07.94, which was about a second off her season-best time of 1:06.40. Senior co-captain
Kayla Schwab also was strong throughout on Wednesday, as she was fourth in the 100 breaststroke with a season-best 1:17.84. She then swam a season-best time in the 200 breaststroke as well, registering a 2:46.37.
Freshman
Laura Vidano earned four points in the 100 butterfly, as she was right on her season-low time with a 1:05.59, and Schwab was second in the 200 IM after recording a 2:34.27. VC also chalked up nine points in the 400 freestyle relay, after swimming a 4:01.27, thanks to Schultz, Ragnini, Corbett and Harrington.
In the 100 free, Harrington was fourth with a 59.55, while senior
Zoe Kurtz posted a time of 1:07.85. Harrington added a 27.49 in the 50 free, and Vidano also added a 27.92 in the 50 free. "On the women's side, we bounced back pretty well in two days from the Seven Sisters Championships. We also had resilience from race-to-race, which takes a lot to do," said head coach
Lisl Prater-Lee.
The Brewers will have another quick turnaround, traveling to Skidmore College in Saratoga Springs, NY at 1 p.m. for the annual Sprint Invitational.
