Men’s Swimming and Diving Topped By Division II Pace Wednesday

PLEASANTVILLE, NY (January 25, 2017) – The Vassar College men's swimming and diving  team returned to action after a 10-day hiatus, dropping a non-conference dual meet to Division II Pace University 151-101 on the road.

Senior Anthony Walker earned a win in the 200 butterfly on Wednesday, and finished second by a tenth of a second in the 100 fly as well. In the 200, Walker swam a controlled, strong race to put up a 1:58.81, which was just over a second over his season-best time of 1:57.30. He also was right near his season-best time of 53.14, chalking up a 53.35 Wednesday evening for second place in the 100 fly.

Walker would also help lead the 200 medley relay to a second-place finish, as Walker teamed with senior Chris Cerutti, junior Jonah Strand and freshman Matthew Imiolek for a time of 1:41.93. Walker also was part of the 400 freestyle team, as Imiolek, junior Luke Morrison and freshman Harrison Taylor booked a 3:30.75.

Strand was strong throughout the night as well, recording a pair of runner-up finishes in the breaststroke events, while collecting the win in the 200 IM event. In the 100 breaststroke, Strand swam a 1:00.77, followed up by a 2:11.34 in the 200 breaststroke. In the 200 IM win for the junior, Strand just out-touched Daniel Galarza of Pace with a 2:02.56.

Freshman Jordan Kalina posted a 5:04.66 for third place in the 500 yard freestyle, which was just over three seconds clear of his season best. The swim was a strong, well-paced effort though for the freshman, who also was second in the 1000 free after swimming a 10:41.48. Taylor booked a season-best time in the 200 free of 1:55.34 for second place.

In the 100 backstroke, Cerutti clocked in with a 58.47 in the 100 yard backstroke, finishing third. He would then record a 2:05.74, which was highlighted by some strong turns and consistency throughout. In the 100 free, Imiolek was third with a 53.24, which was just off a 52.40 seasonal best time. Yoav Yaron also set a personal-best in the 100 free with a 56.23. Yaron also earned a new personal-best in the 50 free, after recording a 24.90.

In the 100 butterfly, Morrison was second after swimming a season-best time of 56.09, while Taylor was just off his personal-best after logging a 56.90. "After a 10-day hiatus from competition, the Vassar men stepped up for great races this evening, showing the ability to take all the work from the training pool to the competition pool," said head coach Lisl Prater-Lee.

The Brewers will compete at 1 p.m. Saturday in Saratoga Springs, NY at Skidmore College for the annual Sprint Invitational.
