HARTFORD, CT (January 14, 2017) – Senior two-time All-American and team captain
Julia Cunningham posted three wins, including a pool record in the 200 butterfly as the Brewer women's swimming and diving team came up short in a pair of dual meets Saturday at Trinity College. Vassar fell to Mount Holyoke College 144-134, and dropped a 166-112 decision to the host Bantams in action from the Trinity Natatorium.
Cunningham's highlight was the pool record time of 2:08.26 in the 200 fly, which bettered the time of 2:11.00 in 2005 held by Bates College's Vanessa Williamson. Cunningham was over 13 seconds faster than her next competitor in the event on Saturday, and that wasn't all for the standout senior.
In the 200 breaststroke, Cunningham powered out to a 10-second victory as she clocked in with a 2:32.60. She would complete the hat trick for wins in the day with another victory in the 100 butterfly, chalking up a 1:00.63, over three seconds better than Audrey Ettinger of Trinity.
Cunningham wasn't the only standout for the Brewers, as sophomore
Kael Ragnini had a strong performance in the 1000 free to earn the win after swimming a 11:12.55. Ragnini would also help lead the 400 free relay to a win with a 3:54.38, teaming with Cunningham, sophomore
Meg Harrington and junior
Cali Corbett.
Sophomore
Hayley Schultz continues to round into form after an early season injury that sidelined her from action, as she won the 100 breaststroke thanks a time of 1:15.30. Schultz trailed at the 50 split and was in third, but powered by Trinity's Catherine Poirier and Mount Holyoke's Claire Beckett to earn the win by .53 seconds.
In diving, senior
Elisielle Wilson continue to make strides in this her first season, as she posted a pair of second-place finishes. Wilson registered a personal-best score of 132.76 in the 1-meter event, following that with another second-place performance in the 3-meter with a personal-best score of 122.93. Wilson also hopped into the pool to swim anchor in the 400 free relay "B" squad for Vassar.
In other events, Corbett was fourth in the 1000 freestyle thanks to a time of 12:05.76, and
Emily McDaniels was fifth in the 100 backstroke with a 1:10.95. Ragnini finished fourth in the 100 back after finishing in 1:07.89, and freshman
Sarah Boese was right behind Corbett with a 1:11.05.
In the 50 freestyle, Harrington was fourth of 12 swimmers in the event with a 27.32, followed closely by teammate
Laura Vidano and her time of 28.05. Senior
Madison Carroll was seventh in the 100 free with a 1:07.75, and Harrington took third in the same event with a 59.10.
The Brewers will take six days off before playing host to the 2017 Seven Sisters Championships, hosted in Kresge Pool in Walker Field House Saturday and Sunday, January 21-22. Action starts at 10 a.m. each day, and all of the festivities will be live streamed on vassarathletics.com.
