Vassar Women’s Swimming and Diving Notes – Trinity, Mount Holyoke

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 11, 2017) – The Vassar College women's swimming and diving team will return home from its training trip to Florida to head to Hartford, CT to battle Trinity College (CT) and Mount Holyoke College in a pair of dual meets Saturday afternoon. The Brewers competed in a friendly training relay meet against Hamilton College on Monday afternoon, but this will be the first scored meet for the Brewer of the 2017 portion of the season.

Last Time Out: The Vassar College women's team last officially swam at the Liberty League Championships on December 2-3, finishing seventh out of 10 teams at the conference meet. Sophomore Sammy Stone broke the 1650 Liberty League Championships record with a 17:37.79, while also posting 244 total points for the weekend. Senior All-American captain Julia Cunningham earned a "B" cut time of 2:07.21 in the 200 butterfly, and also helped Vassar to 248 points thanks to her efforts.
 
A Look At The Brewers:
 
  • The Brewers swam against Hamilton College in Islamorada, FL this past Monday in a friendly training meet. Vassar's 200 meter free relay won their event with a 2:07.17, as Cali Corbett, Cunningham, Kael Ragnini and Stone combined for the victory.
  • Also against Hamilton, Vassar's "A" relay in the 3x100 meter breaststroke relay was second as Cunningham, Hayley Schultz and Emily McDaniels posted a time of 4:27.37.
  • In the opening event, Vassar's women's "A" team finished second in the 3x100 meter butterfly relay, as Julia CunninghamSammy Stone and Zoe Kurtz finished with a 3:51.38. Cunningham swam a 1:08.16 for her split, while Stone posted a 1:13.59 and Kurtz added a 1:29.83 split. 
  • Stone comes into the weekend with the 44th best 200 free time in the nation, while her 5:09.79 in the 500 free is 56th. She also ranks in the top 40 in the 1000 and 1650 free.
  • The Brewers also have another swimmer in the top 100 in the 1650, as Ragnini posted an 18:22.18 at the Liberty League Championships.
  • Cunningham ranks 18th nationally in the 200 fly as of Wednesday afternoon, as the senior captain and two-time All-American looks to return to the NCAA Championships for the third straight season.
  • The senior standout also posted a 4:34.84 in the 400 individual medley, which is 39th in the country as well.
  • Stone and sophomore Hayley Schultz are fifth and sixth in the Liberty League time rankings right now in the 100 breast stroke, respectively. Schultz posted her season-best time of 1:10.10 at the Liberty League Championships.
  • Vassar's freestyle relay will be on display this weekend, after showing well in Florida against Hamilton.
 
A Look At Trinity & Mount Holyoke:
 
  • Trinity will swim on Friday evening against Brandeis University at 6 p.m., before turning around the next morning to face the Brewers and MHC.
  • The Bantams last meet was back on December 10, falling on the road to Clark University 128-95.
  • The Bantams were led by senior Eliza Maciag, who won Trinity's only individual event, the 100-meter backstroke. She is currently ranked in 24th in the event in the NESCAC.
  • Trinity also has a standout in the butterfly in Brenna Weber, who ranks in the top 25 in the NESCAC in the 100 fly.
  • Audrey Ettinger has the Bantams best individual medley times, leading the team in both the 200 and 400 IMs.
  • Mount Holyoke is 1-3 on the season in dual meets, coming off a 199-88 loss to Wellesley College back on November 19. Their last outing came at the Hamilton Invitational, finishing seventh of eighth teams.
  • Kicking-off the meet that day was the Lyons 200-yard freestyle relay team of senior Katie Tyler, sophomore Bri Groves and seniors Anne Kuenning and Emily Craig. The foursome combined to win the event with a time of 1:43.27.
  • Groves continued to produce strong efforts, placing second overall in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:11.10. She then combined once again with Kuenning, Tyler and Craig for a fifth-place finish in the 400-yard medley relay. The group touched with a time of 4:17.88.
  • Craig has paced the Lyons for the freestyle team thus far this year, while Tyler has been the sprint specialist for MHC.
  • Freshman Natalie Burkett has taken over as the top distance swimmer for the Lyons, after the graduation of All-American Cathleen Pruden a year ago.
  • Groves has been strong in the breaststroke events for MHC, pacing the team in top times in both the 100 and 200, while Kuenning has been the top backstroke swimmer for the Lyons.
 
Up Next: The Vassar College women's swimming and diving team will host the 2017 Seven Sisters Championships next weekend in Kresge Pool, starting Saturday at 10 a.m. in Walker Field House.
