POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 11, 2016) -- The Vassar College women's golf team started its 2016-17 season Sunday afternoon in fine fashion, as the Brewers swept visiting Union College in action from Casperkill Golf Course. The teams played a modified match play format on the 5800-yard course that played as a par-72, as players played the full 18 holes but also scored the holes like match play.
Freshman
Andrea Han played in her first collegiate match for the Brewers Sunday afternoon, earning the No. 1 spot for Vassar and knocked off Carly Coppola in the top flight. Han won the match 6 and 5, while shooting an 80 to Coppola's 88. At No. 2, another freshman
Qiwen Tan had success on the links, as she defeated Caroline Roberto 89-94, while earning the match 3 and 2.
Annie Hsu, now in her junior season with the Brewers, shot an 87 on the day to match opponent's Molly Weiner's score. Hsu earned the match point though, as she earned a 4 and 3 victory at No. 3 for the Brewers.
The No. 4 slot saw sophomore
Evon Shay shoot a 93 Sunday afternoon, knocking off Gina Whalen by three strokes over the 18 holes. In match scoring, Shay took the victory 3 and 2. In the final match of the day, Vassar senior
Emily Prince started her final season with the Brewers with a 92, edging Rianna Quiogue by two strokes, while winning the match 1-up.
"All five players composed themselves on the course to come away with a sweep of the five matches," said associate head coach
Anna Ausanio. "This should give us some good momentum going into our upcoming tournament at Wellesley."
Vassar will now head to the Ann S. Batchelder Invitational next weekend, hosted by Wellesley College on Nehoiden Golf Course.
