NORTHAMPTON, MA (February 6, 2016) – The Vassar College women's fencing team finished its 2015-16 Northeast Fencing Conference slate Saturday afternoon, going 4-1 in the final day of conference action from Smith College.
The Brewers dropped their first match of the day 17-10 to Sacred Heart University, but rallied to earn five straight wins with victories over New Hampshire (23-4), Dartmouth College (19-8), Boston University (24-3), Wellesley (17-10) and the University of Massachusetts (22-5).
The Vassar College foil team was the story of the day for Vassar, going 6-0 on the day, posting a 45-9 mark on the afternoon. Sophomore
Kirsten Denman went 11-1 for the afternoon, while freshmen
Mirit Rutishauser chalked up a 14-1 mark and
Sophie Blumenstock was 16-2 on the day.
The women's epee team was just as good for the Brewers, going 5-1 on the day as a squad while posting a 36-18 record for the day. Freshman
Rose Hulsey-Vincent was 14-4 on the afternoon, while junior
Olivia Weiss registered a 15-3 record the afternoon.
In sabre, sophomore
Annie Innes-Gold earned a 13-2 record, while
Lily Elbaum and
Arianna Hawk each earned seven wins for the Brewers. Vassar finished with seven wins on the season in the conference, which was sixth-best in the Northeast Fencing Conference.
Vassar College will head to Columbia University Wednesday evening to take on the host Lions and New York University in non-conference action from Columbia.
