Denman, Innes-Gold Earn Individual Awards At EWFC Championships

NEW YORK (February 14, 2016) – Sophomores Kirsten Denman and Annie Innes-Gold won their respective weapon individual titles at the Eastern Women's Fencing Conference (EWFC), as the Vassar College women's fencing team finished fourth overall with a 4-3 record on Sunday.

The Brewers earned victories of 21-6 over City College of New York, 25-2 over Yeshiva University, 21-6 against Hunter College and Drew University 18-9. The Brewers finished the afternoon with some tough losses, falling to Johns Hopkins University (18-9), Haverford College (14-13) and Stevens Institute of Technology (20-7). The Ducks won the EWFC Championships for the second consecutive season, and fourth time overall.

After the dual meet championships were decided, the fencers returned to the strips for the direct elimination tournaments in all three weapons. These brackets determine this season's EWFC All-Star Teams, consisting of nine competitors in all three weapons.

In foil, Denman was named as the Denise O'Connor Foil Fencer of the Year after winning the bracket in foil. Teammate Sophie Blumenstock was named Foil First Team All-Star, while fellow freshman Mirit Rutishauser had a solid day of action and earned Foil Second Team All-Star.

In the bracket, Denman cruised through her first match 15-3, but was tested in her quarterfinal match, pulling out a 13-12 win over Abby Kaye of Stevens. In the semifinals, Denman earned another hard-fought victory, knocking off Caitlin Kotz of Drew. In the final, Denman earned individual medalist honors with a 15-10 win over Allison Berdichevsky from Hunter.

Blumenstock and Rutishauser were forced to fence in the first round of the elimination round, and Blumenstock earned a 15-9 win. She followed that with a 15-8 win in the quarters before eventually falling to Berdichevsky in the semifinals. Blumenstock would earn a spot in the third-place match, where she dropped a 15-11 decision to Kotz.

In the sabre bracket, Innes-Gold was able to shine for the Brewers, breezing through the first couple of rounds. In the semifinals, Innes-Gold was matched up against Michelle Drobish and fenced well to eke out a 15-12 win to push her into the final.

In the championship bout, Innes-Gold faced Julia Yang of Stevens. In that match, Innes-Gold knocked off the No. 1 seed in stunning fashion with a 15-13 win for the Brewers. The sophomore came all the way from the No. 6 position in the bracket to win, knocking off the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 seeds to earn the title.

In dual match action, the Vassar College epee team was led by senior Rachel Messbauer, who went 9-5 on the day, while Rose Hulsey-Vincent also picked up 10 wins for the Brewers. In early fencing in sabre, Innes-Gold went 13-5 and Lily Elbaum also added seven victories to qualify for the championship bracket later in the day.

Denman went 14-4 on the day in dual matches, while Blumenstock was 11-6, and Rutishauser also posted a 14-5 record for Vassar in foil. VC finished its dual match season Sunday, ending the year with 24 wins, the third-most in program history.

The Brewers will head to the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Championships next Saturday at 9 a.m. in action from Wellesley College.
