Vassar Women's Fencing Match Notes - Sacred Heart Traditional

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (December 4th, 2016) – The Vassar College women's fencing team will travel this Sunday to Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut to compete against some of the country's top teams. At the event, the Brewers will face fencers from Harvard University, Penn State University, New York University, Princeton University, Temple University and the aforementioned host, Sacred Heart University. The Brewers currently carry an 11-3 record overall.

A Look At The Brewers
  • The Brewers are coming off of a strong weekend in which they hosted, and won, the Matt Lampell Invitational for the 3rd consecutive time. 
  • Vassar came into the finals against Drew University as the two seed at the invitational, but was able top the Rangers in dominating fashion by a score of 18-7.
  • Vassar will face its first true road test of the season as their only other competition away from the Walker Field House was in individual competition.
  • Vassar's foil team was unstoppable in the Matt Lampell Invitational going 54-9 on the day.
  • For the foil squad, Mirit Rutishauser went 17-4, Sophie Blumenstock finished 18-3, and Elsa Stoff led the charge with a 19-2 record.
  • The epee crew and sabre squad also had outstanding days as they went 38-15 and 47-17 respectively.
  • Sophomore Rose Hulsey-Vincent came through in the clutch for the Brewers going 3-0 in epee against Drew in the final. 
  • Stephanie Gull and Arianna Hawk both had strong days at saber securing 18 and 17 victories respectively. 
  • The Brewers honored their two seniors, Olivia Weiss and Elsa Stoff on Senior Day at the Matt Lampell Invitational.
  • The Brewers also saw strong performances from Victoria Lau and Lilia Hutchinson.
A Look At The Field
  • All six of Vassar's opponents this weekend finished in the top five at last year's NCAA National Championship.  Princeton (3), Penn State (6), Harvard (7), NYU (13), Temple (16), and SHU (17)
  • Sacred Heart returns with senior Julia Greene who finished 23rd individually in the 2016 sabre NCAA National Championships. 
  • Sacred Heart enters this tournament with a 10-4 record. They went 5-3 in the Vassar invitational earlier this season, but did not face off against the Brewers there.
  • Harvard comes into the weekend with a standout sabre fencer in Adrienne Jarocki who won the individual NCAA National Championship last year.
  • Harvard has yet to compete this season.
  • NYU has yet to compete in team NCAA competition this season, but did compete individually at the Temple Collegiate Open on October 30th.
  • At the Temple Collegiate Open, sophomore Jacqueline Tubbs performed the strongest for the Violets finishing 7th in the saber division.
  • Princeton comes into action with a 6-0 record after competing at the Penn Elite Invitational on November 5th.
  • Princeton returns with three fencers who finished in the top 25 of their division in the NCAA individual National Championship, including Charlene Liu who finished 2nd in the epee.
  • Penn State returns with three fencers who finished in the top 25 at the 2016 NCAA National Championships.
  • NJIT comes into action with a modest 7-6 record on the season, but five of those six losses have come against opponents ranked in the top 10.
  • Temple returns this season with epee fencer Safa Ibrahim, who finished 17th in last year's NCAA National Championships.
Up Next
After a long winter break, the Brewers will return to action in the Cleveland Invitational, hosted by Cleveland State University, on January 21st.
