POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 21, 2016) – The Vassar College women's fencing team played host for the second consecutive weekend on Sunday, as the Brewers won all seven of their matches in earning the title at the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational in action from Walker Field House.
Prior to the matches, the Brewers honored their two seniors in
Olivia Weiss and
Elsa Stoff, who between them have won over 400 bouts in their career. Vassar started in pool play by knocking off City College of New York 25-2, Long Island University at Post 21-6, West Point 17-10 and The College of New Jersey 20-7. In the elimination round, Vassar topped Post again 24-3, defeated the University of Florida 23-4 and topped Drew University 18-7 in the first-place match for the title.
VC was dominant in pool play, but its best test of the afternoon came from the Black Knights of Army, as all three squads earned wins but just barely. Freshman
Stephanie Gull and junior
Arianna Hawk each had two wins in sabre, while
Elsa Stoff and
Sophie Blumenstock were 2-1 as well. In epee,
Victoria Lau led the squad with three victories to help Vassar pull away.
In the championship bracket, Vassar earned the No. 2 seed and rolled into the finals against a very sound Drew University team. The match was very competitive throughout, but all three weapon groups were able to earn victories. In fact, Vassar was 20-1 in squad decisions on Sunday afternoon.
Against the Rangers, Vassar saw some huge performances, including a 3-0 round from
Rose Hulsey-Vincent in epee while Stoff won three bouts in foil. Stoff was up 4-2 in final match, but was pushed to 4-4. Undeterred, Stoff picked up the last tough to earn the victory. Also, sophomore
Mirit Rutishauser chalked up a pair of 5-4 wins, including one in overtime and one that clinched the match for Vassar. In sabre,
Lilia Hutchinson and Gull each were 2-1.
On the day, the sabre team went 47-17, led by the 18 total bout wins by Gull and the 17 from Hawk. In foil, the squad was 54-9 as Stoff was 19-2 on the afternoon, and Blumenstock won 18 of her 21 bouts. Rutishauser was 17-4 as well in the win.
In epee, the total squad count came out to 38-15, led by the 18-3 mark from Hulsey-Vincent. Lau added 13 wins for the Brewers, including six in the bracket round. Weiss was 16-5 on the afternoon to move to 32-9 on the season.
Vassar's B team also fenced on Sunday, and had some nice performances, as Samantha Lottick earned nine bout wins on the day in epee. Also,
Sasha Czarnik posted seven victories, and
Victoria Majarali added seven wins as well in sabre.
Kati Kim chalked up six wins, and sister
Ashley Kim also added five victories.
Zoe Morgan chalked up five wins in foil for the Brewers "B" squad.
Vassar is off until Sunday, December 4 when it travels to the Sacred Heart Multi-Meet to take on some of the best teams in the country.
