POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (October 20, 2016) -- The Vassar College men's fencing team was dominant for the second straight weekend, rolling to its seventh straight win in the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational Sunday from Walker Field House on Senior Day. Vassar honored its four seniors in
Clayton Marr,
Ry Farley,
Campbell Woods and
Jackson Dammann prior to the matches.
The format was played as a round robin between the seven teams in attendance, as Cornell University was unable to make the trip from Ithaca, NY due to snow fall over the evening. That wasn't a problem for Vassar though, as the Brewers won all six of their matches to move to 14-0 on the season. VC lost only 24 bouts all day, scoring over 20 bout victories in all six matches. Vassar picked up wins with a score of 25-2 over RPI, knocking off RPI (25-2), Drew (24-3), Vassar B (24-3), RIT A (22-5), the University of Florida (20-7) and RIT B (23-4).
On the "A" squad, Vassar was dominant all the way through the lineup, as sabre junior
Eli Polston was 14-1 on the day in his traditional weapon, also winning two of three bouts in epee. Senior
Campbell Woods was 8-1 in sabre, also winning three epee bouts, while
Graeme Mills was 15-3 to move to 32-6 on the season.
The foil team was absolutely unstoppable on Sunday afternoon, as junior team captain
Tom Racek and his crew went 51-3 as a squad on the afternoon. Racek went 16-2 on the day, falling only once to a fencer that was not a Brewer, while
Jack Holmes was great with a 17-1 record. Holmes was undefeated in five of the six matches he fenced in. Fellow freshman
Noe Berger didn't drop a bout all day, going undefeated in his 18 outings and is now 31-4 on the season.
Junior
Jonathan Alperstein was perfect in his 15 bouts at epee, and moonlighted as a sabre fencer to earn three more wins against the Vassar "B" squad. Junior
Daniel Swerzenski was 15-3 on Sunday, as he picked up his 24th win of the dual meet schedule, and
Ry Farley won all nine of his epee matches before fencing the final three matches with the sabre group. The epee team was 44-10 on the season, while the sabre crew was 43-11.
The Vassar "B" team was not that far behind their teammates, finishing third overall among teams on the day. Sabre fencer
Eric Lee did will, earning 13 victories on the day. In epee, Dammann,
Nicholas Williams and
Roman Guglielmo all helped Vassar throughout the afternoon, while
Tom Possidente,
Michael Skolnick and
Aaron Choi also helped the foil squad to a strong finish.
"
The men fenced great, just great," said head coach
Bruce Gillman. "We had six other teams to fence and we went right through them...and the Vassar "B" team was third, which was excellent considering we were down one. It was marvelous."
"
Everyone is looking pretty good this year actually so even though this was the seventh straight win this was actually one of the harder Matt Lampell events that we've had." said Alperstein. "Overall though, we were pretty happy with the day's event."
