Vassar Women's Basketball Notes — Brockport Classic

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 16, 2016) — The Vassar College women's basketball team will compete in the Brockport Tip-Off Classic at the Jim and John Vlogianitis Gymnasium in Brockport, NY this weekend.

Vassar will face Morrisville State College on Friday, Nov. 18 at 5:30 p.m., and D'Youville College will play The College At Brockport afterward at 7:30 p.m. The consolation game will be held on Saturday, Nov. 19 at 2 p.m., and the championship game will take place afterward at 4 p.m.

Last Time Out: Vassar dropped its season-opener, 74-71, to New Paltz at the Athletics and Fitness Center on Tuesday. The contest featured 10 ties and six lead changes.

A Look At The Brewers (0-1):

  • Vassar plays three of its first four games on the road before returning home for three games.
  • In her collegiate debut, Sophie Nick led the Brewers with 18 points on nine shots. 
  • Samarah Cook and Ariella Rosenthal added 13 points apiece, combining for nine assists and 12 rebounds. 
  • The Brewers shot 43 percent from the floor and 44 percent from three, compared the their visitors, who shot 44 and 10 percent, respectively. However, Vassar struggled from the charity stripe, only connecting on 56 percent of free throws.
  • Turnovers proved to be the difference-maker in the season-opener vs. New Paltz, as Vassar surrendered 28 points on 29 giveaways. 
  • The Brewers are captained by juniors Ariella Rosenthal and Samarah Cook.
  • Vassar boasts a young squad, comprised of five freshmen, six sophomores, three juniors and no seniors. 
  • Head coach Candice Brown, in her eighth season with the program, added assistant coach Claire Mattox over the offseason. 
  • The Brewers hope to build off their 2015-16 season, in which they finished 10-15 overall and 7-9 in conference play. 


A Look At The Mustangs (1-0):

  • Morrisville State plays five of its first seven games on the road to open the 2016-17 season.
  • The Mustangs cruised to a 69-45 win over SUNY Delhi in their season-opener. 
  • The win marked the first under head coach Erin Skaradek on opening night in the past two seasons, and the first in more than five seasons for the school. 
  • Erin Skaradek is assisted by Liz Unger and Ryan Mahanna.
  • Three Mustangs posted double-figures: Charlotte Walker (18 points), Haley Killmartin (10 points) and Jordan Anderson (10 points)
  • Morrisville States' roster is comprised of four freshmen, three sophomores, two juniors and three seniors. 
  • The Mustangs were picked to finish second in the NEAC with four first-place votes. Last year's NEAC Champion, SUNY Polytechnic was chosen to finish first. 
  • Morrisville State returns nine to the roster, including four starters, from a squad that has qualified for the conference tournament the past two seasons, advancing to the finals in 2014-15. 
  • The Mustangs have posted back-to-back 19-win seasons.


Against Morrisville All-Time: The Brewers are 2-0 against the Mustangs all-time, as they've won 66-48 in 2007 and 63-58 in 2013.

A Look At The Spartans (0-0):

  • The Brockport Tip-Off Tournament will mark the first action for D'Youville this season. 
  • Following the tournament, the Spartans will play three of their next four games at home. 
  • The Spartans boast a young roster of four freshmen and four sophomores, and will be led by three upperclassmen in Jan-Ann Korona, Ali Cochrane and Hannah Simone. 
  • Jan-Ann Korona led last year's team with 8.0 rebounds per game, adding 10.6 points per game on 35 percent shooting. She also poured in a season-high 23 points twice last season.
  • Ali Cochrane saw her role increase over the course of last season, especially in the postseason, and expects to continue to impact the team this year. 
  • Dan Glover, who in his fifth season with the program, said he "believes in each player" despite the youth. 
  • The freshmen class of Spartans is expected to provide athleticism and depth to the team. Forward CeDrice Howard and guard Marina Campbell are expected to contribute early. 
  • After finishing fourth in the AMCC, D'Youville was pegged to finish sixth in the preseason poll, ahead of Hilbert, Penn State Altoona, Franciscan and Medaille. 
  • D'Youville looks to improve upon its 2015-16 season, in which it it finished 13-14 overall, 9-9 in conference play and made it to the semifinals of the AMCC playoffs. 


Against D'Youville All-Time: Should the Brewers and Spartans square off, this will mark their first meeting.

A Look At The Golden Eagles (0-1):

  • Brockport will play four of its first five games at home to open 2016-17. 
  • The Golden Eagles fell in their season-opener to Liberty League opponent Rochester Institute of Technology, 64-56. 
  • Faith Welch was the only Golden Eagle to notch double-digit scoring with 13, as all but two scored at least a point. 
  • Emily Nestler put in work on the defensive end, posting team-highs in rebounds (12) and blocks (three). 
  • The Golden Eagles shot 37 percent from the floor, 25 percent from three and 50 percent from the line, while their visitors shot 38, 40 and 63 percent, respectively.
  • The Golden Eagles struggled early in their season-opener, as they were outscored in the first two quarters. 
  • Brockport will also face Liberty League opponent William Smith College later in their schedule.
  • The Golden Eagles will be looking to build upon their 2015-16 campaign, in which they finished 13-13 and 9-9 in conference play, along with a trip to the SUNYAC Tournament.
  • In the 2016, SUNYAC Tournament, Brockport fell in the first round to Fredonia, 89-81. 


Against Brockport All-Time: The Brewers are 1-0 against the Golden Eagles all-time, as they won 79-61 on the road in 2012.

Next Up: The Brewers will stay on the road, facing Mount Saint Mary College in Newburgh, NY on Tuesday, Nov. 22 at 6 p.m., before returning to Poughkeepsie for a trifecta of games.
