Vassar Drops First Round Decision At St. Lawrence

Shoulders, McDermed net double figures

Canton, NY – The Vassar College Women's Basketball team saw its season come to an end Tuesday night following a 63-53 loss in the First Round of the Liberty League Championship at St. Lawrence. Lindsey Shoulders (Glen Allen, VA) led the team with 16 points and senior Sierra McDermed (San Antonio, TX) totaled 14 points.
 
Tuesday's loss closes the season for Vassar at 12-14 overall. St. Lawrence advances to the semifinal round with a 17-9 record.
 
How It Happened
  • A tightly contested first quarter saw St. Lawrence carry a 16-14 lead into the second stanza.
  • Vassar scored the first four points of the game and maintained the lead until an Elizabeth Flynn layup pushed the Saints in front 9-8.
  • The Brewers regained a 14-13 lead on a McDermed bucket in the final minute of the quarter ahead of Hannah Van Dyke triple that gave St. Lawrence the two-point edge through 10 minutes.
  • Shoulders scored the first five points of the second frame and pushed Vassar in front 19-16 on a three-point play 1:07 into the period.
  • St. Lawrence answered with a 20-4 run that saw it surge in front 36-23 on a Norah Niesz layup with 44 seconds left before halftime.
  • Emery Mullen stopped the run with a bucket in the final half minute to being Vassar to within 36-25 at the break.
  • Vassar shot 34.4-percent over the opening 20 minutes and went 0-for-4 from behind the arc.
  • St. Lawrence went 4-for-7 from three-point range in the first half and shot an even 50-percent prior to halftime.
  • The Saints opened the second half on a 9-2 run to push their advantage to 45-27 on an Izzy Caron bucket midway through the third quarter.
  • Vassar would be unable to pull closer than 12 points the remainder of the quarter and headed to the fourth quarter trailing 51-39 after a McDermed bucket in the closing seconds of the third period.
  • The Brewers sliced their disadvantage to 55-51 with 3:04 left in the contest following a 12-4 run to start the final stanza.
  • Sophia Ippolito (Cumberland Center, ME) netted five points over the run and a Maureen Regan (Oak Lawn, IL) bucket capped the spurt.
  • St. Lawrence came back with the next six points and held Vassar without a point until the 27 second mark to regain a 61-51 lead.
  • A pair of free-throws from Flynn followed a McDermed conversion and gave St. Lawrence the final 63-53 advantage.
  • Vassar improved to 41.4-percent shooting after halftime, but went just 1-for-2 from behind the arc in the second half.
  • St. Lawrence converted at 42.3-percent after halftime and went without a triple in four attempts.
 
For The Brewers
  • Shoulders netted 16 points on 7-for-11 shooting and led the Brewers with seven rebounds.
  • McDermed scored 14 points for Vassar and finishes her career with 1,435 points, good for fifth all-time on the Vassar scoring list. McDermed rounded out Tuesday's tilt with two rebounds and three steals.
  • Regan tallied eight points and led the Brewers with three assists.
  • Mullen chipped in six points, four rebounds and two assists.
  • Ippolito scored five points and collected six rebounds.
 
For The Saints
  • Niesz led the Saints with 16 points after going 6-for-10 from the floor and led all players with six assists.
  • Flynn went 5-for-10 from the field on the way to 12 points and finished the night with eight rebounds and three steals.
  • Van Dyke contributed nine points to the victory to go along with five rebounds and three assists.
  • Jackie Malley totaled eight points, five rebounds and a trio of assists.
 
Game Statistics
  • Vassar shot 37.7-percent overall for the game and finished 1-for-6 from three-point range.
  • St. Lawrence finished shooting 46.2-percent and went 4-for-11 from behind the arc.
  • The Saints held a slim 14-13 edge in points off of turnovers.
  • Vassar held the advantage in second chance points, 7-4, and points in the paint, 32-30.
