Vassar Women's Fencing Match Notes - Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 10, 2016) – The Vassar College women's fencing team will open up its dual meet season, hosting the 2016 Vassar Invitational.  The Brewers look to continue making progress in the tournament, finishing 5-2 last year after dropping four matches the year prior.  The Brewers come into the invitational having faced strong competition in The Big One individual invitational hosted by Smith College last weekend.

A Look At The Brewers
  • In 2015-16 the Brewers had a great year, ending with a record of 25-24
  • Vassar College opened its season last weekend at the Big One, an individual event hosted by the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference (NEIFC) at Smith College
  • Vassar's sophomore star Rose Hulsey-Vincent finished in third place, taking home the bronze for the Brewers in epee at The Big One invitational
  • Senior Olivia Weiss also had a standout performance for Vassar as she earned the number one seed in epee bracket play after allowing just seven touches in her six pool play bouts. She went on to finish 5th in bracket play.
  • In foil action the Brewers saw three fencers earn top 25 finishes, as Mirit Rutishauser, Elsa Stoff, and Sophie Blumenstock finished in 11th, 17th, and 24th place respectively.
  • Both Stoff and Rutishauser finished a perfect 6-0 in pool play, with each earning a top 10 seed in bracket play
  • Freshman sabre Stephanie Gull also went undefeated in pool play for the Brewers earning the 5th seed in bracket play, in which she lost in the round of 16, finishing in 10th place.
  • Head Coach Bruce Gillman is now in his 12th season with the Brewers and has led the women's squad to a winning record six times
A Look At The Invitational Field
  • The Haverford women's fencing team is led by senior sabriste Sofia Tieze. At the Temple Open on 10/31 she posted seven wins, and tied for 22nd place overall.
  • Queens College sent 8 members to compete at last March's NCAA Regionals hosted by Vassar College. Foil Sabrina Decopain posted two wins in the opening round.
  • The LIU pioneers went 0-5 at the Drew Fall Fencing Classic on 11/7/16. Three matches were lost by only a single point. Epee Chantelle Duncan led the way with a 12-3 record.
  • Incarnate women's fencing was led by epee Oksana Samorodova at last spring's Western Regional Individual Championships, where she finished in third with a 10-2 record.
  • Cornell is currently ranked number 10 by the NCAA. The team comes off a challenging weekend at the Penn Elite Invitational. The epees went 19-26, led by Victoria Wines.
  • Stevens Institute of Technology opened their season at the Temple Invitational on 10/31. Abby Kaye led the team, finishing 7th in foil.
  • Farleigh Dickinson University also competed in the Temple Invitational. Freshman Natalia Toby placed 10th for epee, posting a 4-0 in the first round of pool play and a 4-0 mark in the second round as well.
  • Sacred Heart University opened its season at The Big One Invitational. Samantha Abbott tied for third in epee. Also in epee competition, Carly Glowacky placed eighth. Julia Greene earned the number nine spot in saber competition.
 
Up Next
The Brewers will host the annual Matt Lampell Hudson Valley invitational next weekend on Sunday, November 20th. The team will celebrate its Senior Day to recognize the Brewers who will be fencing in their last home match. The invitational is set to start at 10 a.m. in Walker Field House.
