MONTCLAIR, NJ (January 27, 2016) – The Vassar College men's swimming and diving team competed in a dual meet with the Red Hawks of Montclair State University, falling in a tightly-contested 128-102 decision Wednesday from Ponzer Center Pool.
The Brewers had a plethora of solid performances on the evening, highlighted by strong swims by Vassar in the 500 freestyle and the 200 breast, along with a strong diving outing for VC. The night started with a second place finish by the Brewers in the 400 medley relay, posting a 3:45.87 thanks to the efforts from
Chris Cerutti,
Jonah Strand,
Anthony Walker and
Isaiah Hale.
The second event of the 13-event program was the 1000 freestyle, and freshman
Alex May was phenomenal as he won the event by nearly 14 seconds with an in-season best of 10:23.77, trimming eight seconds off his Brewer best.
The 200 freestyle followed after May's victory, and it saw another VC swimmer finish first, as Walker led from coast to coast in posting a 1:52.46. Freshman
Ian LaBash also competed in the 200 free for the Brewers, finishing fourth with a 1:55.57.
Vassar picked up five more points in the 50 free; as
Greg Cristina was third with a 23.31 while
Lukas Harries chalked up a 23.68 for fourth place. Sophomore
Jonah Strand continued his winning ways of late, as he used an amazing 34.55 breaststroke split in the 200 IM to run away from the field in earning a 2:04.24 winning time.
Sophomore
Luke Morrison also scored the Brewers in the 200 IM, as he swam a 2:12.88. Walker was back in the pool to pick up yet another victory and nearly set a season-best, swimming a 1:59.84 in the 200 butterfly. Cerutti was second in the 200 backstroke with a 2:05.83, while
Michael Colletta also scored with a 2:19.90.
May returned to action in the 500 free and finished third with a 5:16.10, and LaBash (5:20.66) and Hale (5:25.34) followed behind May to earn points in the distance free event. Strand earned nine more points in the 200 breaststroke with a win after swimming a 2:16.68.
Montclair State doesn't have a 3-meter diving board, so the divers competed in two separate 1-meter diving events.
Clancy Green earned second in both events, finishing with 109.55 points in the five-dive first set, later chalking up 161.15 points in the second, six-dive grouping. The combined 270.70 over the 11 dives set a new personal best by over 40 points.
Fellow diver
Connor Martin was third in the first diving event with 106.20, finishing with 209.40 total points over the 11 dives.
The Brewers finish their home slate on Saturday at 1 p.m. in Kresge Pool, hosting the Vassar Sprint Invitational for Senior Day.
