LA JOLLA, CA (January 19, 2016) – The Vassar College men's fencing team resumed its schedule on Sunday, taking part in the West Invitational, hosted by the University of California-San Diego in the RIMAC Arena.
The Brewers were facing some very strong team on Sunday, including No. 10 Stanford University and also host UC-SD, which was receiving votes in the recent CollegeFencing360.com National Polls. The Brewers went 3-3 on the afternoon, knocking off the University of Incarnate Word twice, both by the same 23-4 score lines, while also earning a 21-6 victory over Cal Tech.
The Brewers dropped a 20-7 match to Stanford during round two of action, and followed the win over Cal Tech with losses to hosts California-San Diego (18-9) and the Air Force Academy (18-9). The 3-3 record on Sunday afternoon moved Vassar to 16-10 on the season.
As has been the case all season, the sabre squad were the standouts for the Brewers on Sunday, going 37-17 on the day led by the 10-4 record from senior captain
Elam Coalson (River Forest, IL/Oak Park & River Forest). Junior
Campbell Woods (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar), who was making his first fencing appearance as a Brewer in the Golden State, went 10-4 on the day.
Men's epee picked up 28 wins on the afternoon Sunday, led by the nine from sophomore
Jonathan Alperstein (Fishkill, NY/John Jay). The sophomore captured at least one win in all six matches, including going 3-0 against Stanford in round two. Fellow sophomore
George Whiteside (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) added eight wins on the afternoon, as did junior captain
Ry Farley (Pasadena, CA/Waverly School).
In men's foil, sophomore
Tom Racek (Clark's Summit, PA/Abington Heights) registered six bout victories including three against Cal Tech, while teammate
Jackson Dammann (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) added six wins as well along with a 3-0 record against Cal Tech as well.
Other solid performances included an 8-5 record at sabre for sophomore
Eli Polston (Silver Spring, MD/Einstein), while
Eric Lee (Fishkill, NY/John Jay) was 5-0 as well in sabre including an unblemished 3-0 in the day's finale against Incarnate Word.
Vassar College will start to get into its conference slate next weekend, traveling to Chestnut Hill, MA to take part in the second of the Northeast Fencing Conference Meets. Action at Boston College starts at 10 a.m. in the Flynn Recreation Complex.
