SOUTH HADLEY, MA (January 14, 2016) – Sophomore
Jonah Strand (Woodstock, NY/Onteora Central) chalked up a pair of victories Thursday afternoon, but the Brewers' men's swimming and diving team fell 174-113 to Trinity College in action from the Mount Holyoke Natatorium.
Strand wasn't challenged in either of the breaststroke events, rolling to a 1:01.55 victory in the 100 breaststroke and a 2:16.65 in the 200 breast. In the longer distance race, Strand won by over seven seconds. He also chalked up a pair of second-place finishes, coming in second in the 200 IM with a 2:05.77 while helping the Vassar "A" 200 medley relay to a time of 1:43.19.
Freshman
Alex May (Wallingford, CT/Lyman Hall) started the afternoon with a strong win in the 1000 free, as he raced to a time of 10:38.70. For May, it was his third-fastest time of the season thus far, while he closed with a solid 30.75 in the last lap. Teammate
Isaiah Hale (Dansville, NY/Dansville) was runner-up to May, taking second-place with a 11:12.42.
In the 200 yard freestyle
Ian LaBash (Studio City, CA/Cleveland) posted a 1:53.75, his second-fastest time of the year, coming in third-place for the Brewers. The 100 backstroke saw
Chris Cerutti (Mount Kisco, NY/Fox Lane) come in second place with a time of 58.63, while sophomore
Luke Morrison (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield College Preparatory) topped his previous seasonal-best of 1:01.82 with a 1:00.72.
Junior
Anthony Walker (Madison, WI/James Madison Memorial) placed second in the 200 butterfly, swimming a 1:59.66, while teammate
Kyle Gray (Cresco, PA/Pocono Mountain East) swam his first 200 yard fly event ever and finished fourth with a 2:30.67. Later,
Greg Cristina (Suffield, CT/Suffield) put together one of his best races of the season in the 50 free, coming into the wall first with a 22.79.
The 100 freestyle saw Walker take second with a 50.73, while freshman
Lukas Harries (Raleigh, NC/Lee Academy) was fifth with a 53.27. Sophomore
Jose Rojas (Bell, CA/Bell) registered a season-best time of 59.28.
Cerutti was back in the water in the 200 backstroke and took third with a 2:08.88, and Hale highlighted a strong finish in the 200 breaststroke as he teamed with Strand to take fourth with a 2:34.58. Harries was fifth in the 100 breast as well with a 1:07.33 as Vassar had three scorers in the event.
May returned to action for the 500 free and finished second after posting a time of 5:14.51, while LaBash was third in the same distance with a 5:19.90. Walker added another runner-up time in the 100 fly after swimming a 54.50.
The divers also had a strong day for the Brewers, as
Clancy Green (La Verkin, UT/Eastern Mennonite) won the 3-meter event with 148.20 points. Green also added more valuable points in the 1-meter dive, finishing second on 161.70 points with teammate
Marvin Corleto (Los Angeles, CA/Camino Nuevo) going over the century mark for the first time with 102.95 points.
"We coaches are happy with the energy level and enthusiasm we had on the pool deck today," said head coach
Lisl Prater-Lee. "We spread the lineup out, trying to gain as many points as we could but we came up a bit short. We knew it would be a battle and we gave it what we had."
Vassar College will be back in the pool on Saturday, January 16 in Clinton, NY for a pair of dual meets starting at 1 p.m. against Hamilton College and Rochester Institute of Technology.
