What To Look For
So far this season, the Mount Holyoke College Lyons have done well for themselves, while the Trinity College Bantams have struggled. VC is somewhere in the middle and looks to improve its 3-2 record. All three schools dropped their most-recent meet, so expect to see everyone swimming for momentum heading into the latter part of the season.
A Look At The Brewers
- The Brewers took a break from the wintry weather of New York for a warm getaway in sunny Florida. VC competed in friendly competition Jan. 9 at the Aqua Crest Atomic Fireball Meet in Delray Beach.
- The Brewers haven't swam competitively since Dec. 5 in the Liberty League Championships, but the month of January features four separate meets, three of which are away.
- VC performed well in the Liberty League Championships in Troy, NY. The women finished third of 10 teams both days, marking the highest finish in school history at the meet with 822 points.
- Freshman swimmers were phenomenal at the Liberty League Championships, as Haley Schultz (Fayetteville, NY/Jamesville-DeWitt) set the VC school record with a 1:08.09 time in the 100-yard breastroke, while Sammy Stone (Wake Forest, NC/Cardinal Gibbons) registered 209 points in her seven swims.
- Junior Julia Cunningham (Yardley, PA/Peddie School) earned All-Liberty League Second Team in her final individual swim of the weekend, taking second in the 200 Fly with a 2:07.36 time, good for 28 points.
- Newcomer Kael Ragnini (Barrington, IL/Barrington) swam a lifetime-best in the mile for VC, posting a 18:40.31 mark for ninth place in the Championships.
- Freshman Sammy Stone holds team-high times for five swimming categories, including the 100-yard freestyle (55.11), 200-yard freestyle (1:55.15), 500-yard freestyle (5:04.28), 1,000-yard freestyle (10:41.35) and the 1650-yard freestyle (18:04.93).
- Julia Cunningham also possesses team-highs in numerous categories in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:29.37), 100-yard butterfly (58.52), 200-yard butterfly (2:06.57), 200-yard individual medley (2:10.07) and the 400-yard individual medley (4:37.45).
A Look At The Mount Holyoke College Lyons
- The Lyons are swimming fairly well this season, as represented by their 4-2 mark. The women won four straight in dominating fashion from November to January, but lost their most recent event at Wheaton College on Tuesday.
- The tri-meet in Norton, MA featured MHC, Clark University and Wheaton College. The Lyons came up victorious versus Clark with a 147-83 win, but fell short, 134-105, in their meeting with Wheaton that day.
- Senior Cathleen Pruden led the way in the tri-meet, securing three individual victories. Pruden proved to be effective in long-distance swims, claiming first in the 1,000-yard freestyle (10:30.44), 200-yard individual medley (2:08.92) and 500-yard freestyle (5:09.50).
- Two Lyons finished in the top three of the 200-yard freestyle. Junior Emily Craig notched first place with a 2:04.77 time, and senior Erica Carvell was close behind her with a 2:05.75 mark, good for third place.
A Look At The Trinity College Bantams
- The Bantams look to capture their first win of the season after suffering three straight setbacks with blowouts to Wellesley (222-58), Hamilton (241-47) and Bates (187-47).
- The Bantams struggled mightily Dec. 12 in their most recent outing at Bates, but two swimmers earned a pair of top-three finishes.
- Freshmen are currently leading the charge, as Casey Crowley came in second in the 100-yard freestyle and third in the 100-yard butterfly, while Lauren D'Angelo came in third in the 100-yard backstroke and 1,000-yard freestyle.
- Trinity hopes a 33-day break between meets will leave them fresh and ready to go against VC and MHC on Thursday.
Up Next
