Box Score PURCHASE, NY (April 29, 2015) - Freshman
Bobby Kinne (Great Barrington, MA/Monument Mtn. Regional) went 4-for-4 with three RBI as Vassar College scored six unanswered runs to earn a thrilling 6-5 come-from-behind, non-conference win over hosts Manhattanville College Wednesday afternoon.
The host Valiants (23-16) jumped out in front early, thanks to a first inning that saw Manhattanville plate five runs. Robbie Lynch doubled in two runs with a line drive off the left field wall, and later in the inning Jeff Moskowitz pushed across two more with a single to right field off Vassar College starter
Derek DeMild (Peabody, MA/Peabody Veteran's Memorial).
From the point though, DeMild settled down and did not allow another run over the final four innings of work for the freshman. DeMild's control of the Valiant offense allowed the Brewers (8-17) to slowly chip away at their deficit, first getting on the board in the top of the third to make the score 5-1.
In the third inning,
Denis Shanagher (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) led off the frame with a double down the left field line, two batters later coming around to score on a RBI single by freshman
Bobby Kinne (Great Barrington, MA/Monument Mtn. Regional).
The Brewers trimmed the Valiant lead to two in the top of the fifth, as senior
Kyle Casey (San Diego, CA/Vista) continued his hot hitting, driving in a run with a single. On the play, an errant throw to third base allowed junior
Nick Johnson (San Francisco, CA/St. Ignatius Prep) to come around and score after earlier singling.
Vassar pulled even closer in the top of the sixth, as senior
Jason Garfinkel (Encino, CA/Harvard-Westlake) walked to lead off the inning. Junior
Brooks English (Milton, MA/Milton Academy) also reached on a base on balls, and the two runners moved up on a wild pitch. Kinne chalked up his second RBI of the game on a sacrifice fly to score Garfinkel, pulling Vassar to within one at 5-4.
In the top of the seventh, the Brewers again threatened, as Casey posted his sixth double of the season with one out. The senior would be stranded though, as Vassar was stuck down one going into the seventh inning stretch.
The Brewers did complete the comeback in the eighth inning, thanks to the fourth hit of the day by Kinne. Garfinkel singled to start the frame, and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt from Shanagher. Two batters later, Kinne stepped up and drilled the first pitch he saw to right field to plate Garfinkel and tie the game at five.
The host Valiants put two runners on in the bottom of the eighth with one out, but sophomore
Robert Winkelmann (Wappinger's Falls, NY/Beacon) escaped the jam to keep the score tied at five. Winkelmann turned in another great performance for VC, as he tossed three scoreless innings of relief, surrendering just two hits and two walks, eventually getting the win for the Brewers.
The Brewers took their only lead of the game in the ninth, as
Cory Wuenschell (Pittsburgh, PA/Mt. Lebanon) doubled to start the inning. Two batters later, freshman
Eric Strickland (Round Rock, TX/Round Rock) reached on an error, allowing Wuenschell to come around and score to give VC a 6-5 edge.
In the bottom half of the ninth, Shanagher came on to work for the Brewers, and pitched around a leadoff walk to earn his second save of the year. The win marked the first time all season that Vassar has pulled out a win after trailing after the first inning.
Kinne upped his season-best hitting streak to 11 games, and the freshman has now reached base safely in his past 17 games. He leads the squad with 11 multi-hit games, and also now paces the Brewers with 15 RBI.
Casey finished 3-for-5 with a double and an RBI, marking his third three-hit game in his last five games and his fourth contest with three hits over the last seven outings. Johnson added three hits, a double and a run scored, while Garfinkel scored twice and had two singles. Vassar's 14 hits tied for the third most this year.
Vassar College will now return home for the final three games of the season, hosting John Jay for Senior Day Saturday on Prentiss Field at 1 p.m., before finishing the year Sunday afternoon for a non-conference twinbill with City College of New York at 1 p.m. in Poughkeepsie.
