Brewers Bounced by No. 2 RIT

Box Score

ROCHESTER, NY (April 11, 2015) – The No. 2 Rochester Institute of Technology used an 8-0 run between the first and second quarters to jump out ahead of Vassar  before securing a 22-7 victory Saturday afternoon. The Tigers outshot the Brewers 49-24 and held a 20-12 advantage in faceoffs to control possession. RIT moves to 13-0 on the season and 4-0 in the Liberty League with the win, while Vassar drops to 6-6 (1-4 LL).

Ryan Lee, Kyle Aguin and Chad Levick led the way for the Tigers on offense, recording four goals a piece while combining for eight assists. Senior Scott Brekne (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) notched a team-high three goals for the Brewers.

After winning the initial faceoff, Tiger attackman Eddie Kiesa notched his 26th goal of the season off a pass from Allister Warren just 41 seconds into the contest.  The Brewers quickly responded with a goal of their own at the 13:12 from mark junior attackman Noah Parson (Cary, NC/Panther Creek), his 27th goal of the season.  Just a few minutes later with 10:06 to play Brekne gave Vassar a 2-1 lead off a pass from Sam Houston-Read (Waban, MA/Newton South).

Following multiple turnovers from each team, Allister Warren scored his 27th goal of the season off a failed Brewer clear attempt to tie the game at 2-2 with 1:46 left to play in the 1st quarter.  At the end of the 1st quarter the score remained 2-2 as the Brewers were able to slow the pace, and cash in on their scoring chances early on.

The Tigers started the action in the second period scoring three goals in the first 1:36, taking advantage once again of the Brewers inability to clear the ball. Sophomore attackman Ryan Lee added his second and third goals of the game, stretching the lead to 7-2.  Two more goals from the Tigers attackmen Chad Levick and Kyle Sterzin brought the lead to 9-2.  The Brewers were able to stop the 8-0 Tiger run with a man-up goal from Scott Brekne, his second of the game, off an assist from Houston-Read at 3:46 to cut the lead to six.

Kyle Aquin added his second goal of the game from Allister Warren to stretch the lead back to seven with forty seconds left in the half, making it 10-3 at the break.

In the first half the Brewers were 2-2 on extra man opportunities and had a fantastic performance from Erik Mikelinich (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills HS West) who made 10 saves. VC was outshot 25-9 and only won 4-15 first half faceoffs, leading to their seven goal deficit at the half.

The Tigers started the second half the way they ended the first with goals from Kyle Aquin and Chad Levick, each players' third of the game.  Following another goal from Allister Warren at the 12:24 mark gave the Tigers a commanding 13-3 lead.  Aquin notched his 4th goal of the game, but the Brewers responded just 15 seconds later with a goal by Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield CT/New Fairfield) off a dish from Alex Georgalas (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa).

Another pair of goals from Levick and Lee stretched the Tiger lead to 12.  After one more from the Tigers, Jordan Wagman (Lutherville Timonium, MD/Gilman School) found Houston-Read in front of the net to make the score 17-5.  Minutes later the RIT goalie Jarryd Lee nearly went coast to coast, but after missing the net on his shot attempt, Drew Tosaya picked up a groundball and brought the count to 18-5 at the end of the 3rd period.

Vassar opened the scoring in the fourth quarter with an unassisted goal from Liam Moriarty, his second of the game and 21st of the season.  Following another RIT goal, Scott Brekne recorded his third hat trick of the season off a pass from Matthew Altman (New Fairfield CT/New Fairfield), making the score 19-7. The Tigers ended the game on a 3-0 run to cap the 15-goal victory.

Vassar will return to action on Wednesday, April 15 to face Williams College at Weinberg Field at 4:30 pm.

Notes:

Senior Scott Brekne recorded his 300th career groundball against RIT, he is now the only player to finish with 300+ faceoff wins and 300+ groundballs.
