Box Score SARATOGA SPRINGS, NY (March 28, 2015) - Skidmore College opened the game on a 5-0 scoring run, and never looked back downing Vassar 12-5 Saturday afternoon. The Thoroughbreds never trailed in the game, forcing a season-high 23 turnovers from the Brewers while senior attackman Josh Trachentenberg tallied a game-high six points for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds improve to 3-6 and 1-2 in the Liberty League with the win, while Vassar now stands at 4-4 (0-2 LL).
The Brewers got off to a slow start in the first quarter, as Skidmore opened up the game with five unanswered goals. Four different Thoroughbred players notched a goal in the opening 15 minutes, as turnovers and missed opportunities plagued Vassar early.
Skidmore was the first to score again in the second quarter, getting a goal on its first possession from Trachtenberg at the 14:22 mark. Vassar finally broke into the scoring column with 6:15 left in the half, as senior Seam Brazier (Stony Brook, NY/Ward Melville) buried a shot off a dish from sophomore Sam Houston-Read (Waban, MA/Newton South). The Thoroughbreds immediately answered back, winning the ensuing faceoff and scoring just 12 seconds later to make to 6-1.
Trachtenberg added another for the hosts to make it 7-1 at the 3:04 mark, as Vassar struggled to clear its zone and get stops on defense if the first half. VC converted just one of its 16 shots in the first, as the Brewers trailed 7-1 heading into the break.
Skidmore was again first on the board in the third quarter, as Kevin Mulvey broke through for a goal at the 8:27 mark. Trachtenberg put away his fourth of the game with 5:16 left in the third to extend the lead to 9-1. The Brewers got their first goal of the half on a man-up opportunity, as Brazier notched his second of the game on another feed from Houston-Read. Vassar controlled the final possession of the quarter, but could not produce a shot as Skidmore carried a 9-2 advantage heading into the fourth.
Sophomore Liam Moriarty (New Fairfield, CT/New Fairfield) scored a trio of goals in the fourth quarter for the Brewers, but it was too little too late as Skidmore added three more to secure the seven-goal victory.
In goal, Skidmore freshman Chris Baughan stopped 14 shots for his third career win, while freshman Erik Mikelinich (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills HS West) and sophomore Brandon Crecco (Carmel, NY/Mahopac) combined for eight saves.
VC will return to action on Wednesday, April 1 to face local Liberty League rival Bard College at 4:30 pm on the road.
