HANOVER, NH (February 7, 2015) -- The Vassar College women's fencing team finished the Northeast Fencing Conference slate Saturday, going 4-1 on the day in action from Dartmouth College.
The Brewers (22-16) earned wins over Wellesley College (15-12), University of New Hampshire (19-8), Boston University (19-8) and University of Massachusetts (18-9), but fell in the finale 20-7 to Sacred Heart Univeristy.
In the opening match of the day, the Brewers earned an important win over the Blue, thanks to a total team effort. The epee group went 6-3 over WC, as
Olivia Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA/Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) went 3-0. Also, Vassar freshman sabre fencer
Annie Innes-Gold (Northampton, MA/Northampton) went 3-0, while senior
Kathleen Konno (Newburgh, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) also picked up two wins in sabre.
Later in the afternoon, Vassar knocked off New Hampshire thanks to three wins each from Innes-Gold, freshman
Kirsten Denman (Yellow Springs, OH/Yellow Springs) and sophomore
Elsa Stoff (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven). The Brewers followed that with another 19-8 win over Boston University, highlighted by a 7-2 performance by the epee crew. Weiss had another 3-0 outing, while senior
Megan Lewis (Charleston, SC/Governor's School) added two wins in epee.
The Brewers won their fourth match of the day against Massachusetts with an 18-9 decision, as the foil and epee team both went 7-2. Denman and Stoff each went 3-0, as did Lewis, Weiss and Innes-Gold.
In the final match of the afternoon, the Brewers fell to the Pioneers of SHU, finishing seventh in the conference with six wins on the year. Denman won two of her three bouts, and finished the day with 13 victories, tied for tops on the team.
Innes-Gold was 13-2 Saturday, while Weiss ended the afternoon with a 12-3 day. Stoff went 12-3 as well for the Brewers at foil, while
Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale) added five wins at epee.
The Brewers head to New York University Tuesday night to take on the Violets and Columbia University in non-conference action starting at 5 p.m..
