A Look At The Brewers
- Vassar College opened its season at The Big One last Saturday, an individual event hosted by the New England Intercollegiate Fencing Conference (NEIFC) at Smith College.
- Sophomores Jonathan Alperstein (Fishkill, NY/John Jay) and George Whiteside (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) tied for third in the men's epee at The Big One.
- Sophomore sabre fencer Eli Polston (Silver Spring, MD/Einstein) was dominant Saturday, just missing the finals while finishing third after earning the No. 1 seed.
- The sabre team was spectacular for the Brewers, putting three fencers in the top 10, while having five in the top 24 of 76 total competitors.
- Fellow sophomore Tom Racek (Clark's Summit, PA/Abington Heights) took seventh in the foil Saturday, the only Brewer in the top 20 of the event.
- Of the Brewer's projected starting nine this year, six had top 10 finishes at The Big One.
- Head coach Bruce Gillman is entering his 11th year with the team, guiding VC to eight straight double-digit win campaigns.
- Make sure to watch all the action this weekend, as Vassar Athletics brings you all of Vassar's matches Sunday thanks to Boxcast at the Live Video link above.
- Of Vassar's 20 fencers, the Brewers have nine states and the country of China covered. The Brewers seven competitors from the Empire State, most on the squad.
- The epee team of five this season all made the elimination round at The Big One, as Whiteside, Alperstein and sophomore Daniel Swerzenski (Oak Ridge, NJ/Butler) all won at least one bout.

A Look At The Invitational Field
- The Brewers will host a bevy of teams this weekend, hosting CCNY, the University of Florida, Haverford College, Hunter College, Lafayette College, Sacred Heart, Stevens, Army and Yeshiva University.
- Last year, Sacred Heart earned the team title in the event, as it went undefeated in action.
- Sunday's affair should be interesting for the Brewers, as SHU is one of VC's top rivals, but the two teams will not fence each other, but be sure some scouting will be taking place.
- Vassar will fence the exact same schedule as last year, with the only change being that it will add the Gators of Florida to the slate.
- Stevens will have one of the best epee fencers in the nation on hand Sunday, as Logan Koester will battle the field.
- Vassar went 6-3 last year against the teams comprising the Invitational field this weekend.

Up Next
The Brewers will look forward to another home day of action, hosting Senior Day November 22 at home for the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational in Walker Field House, as a 10 a.m. start time is set.
