POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 22, 2015) – The Vassar College women's fencing team went 7-0 on the afternoon, combining to post a 161-28 record across the three weapons to earn the team title at the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational Sunday in action from Walker Field House.
Matt Lampell, who is a former Vassar College head coach, was on hand for the second consecutive year to watch the festivities and awards presentation to the Brewers at the end of the day. VC started the day with a 20-7 win over Drew University, and cruised to victories over Queens College (24-3), Marist College (26-1), LIU (24-3), West Point (21-6), CCNY (20-7) and Yeshiva University (26-1).
Vassar also honored its four seniors on the women's side prior to the day's action, presenting
Lily Elbaum (Troy, NY/Ottumwa),
Rachel Messbauer (Springfield, MA/MacDuffie School), and captains
Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale) and
Maggie Shepherd (Sausalito, CA/Novato) with senior plaques for their service.
In sabre on the day, Elbaum and sophomore
Annie Innes-Gold (Northampton, MA/Northampton) each went 20-1, as the pairing finished the afternoon on 18-bout winning streaks. Sabre teammate
Arianna Hawk (East Northport, NY/Commack) (pictured above) added an 18-3 record for the Brewers, as the three combined to go 58-5 on the afternoon, winning 53 of their final 54 bouts.
The foil team spread the bouts around throughout the afternoon, as four fencers each were stellar in their action. Freshman
Mirit Rutishauser (LaGuardia School of Music & Art) led the squad with 16 victories to up her record to 25-8, while fellow newcomer
Sophie Blumenstock (St. Paul, MN/Nova Classical Academy) chalked up 14 wins in her 17 total bouts. Sophomore
Kirsten Denman (Yellow Springs, OH/Yellow Springs) added a 7-1 mark in limited play, while
Elsa Stoff (Rumson, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) registered 11 wins as well.
Five epee fencers made their way onto the strip Sunday afternoon for Vassar, as junior
Olivia Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA/Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) won all 18 of her bouts to pace the Brewers. Freshman
Rose Hulsey-Vincent (Woodinville, OR/Woodinville) posted 14 wins, and Shepherd fenced with VC and some other schools but went 6-2 in the Brewer lineup.
Vassar will return to the strip on December 6 at 10 a.m., traveling to Sacred Heart University to battle some of the nation's best collegiate teams.
