POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 22, 2015) – The Vassar College men's fencing squad, who celebrated Senior Day for its four seniors Sunday, lost just 15 bouts all afternoon against other schools, cruising to a seventh straight Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational championship from Walker Field House.
The Brewers honored their four seniors prior to the start of the action this morning, as
Justin Riley (Bakersfield, CA/Highland),
Bo Peng (Shenzhen, China/Minnesota Valley Lutheran),
Zachary Wilson (Rochester, CA/Allendale Columbia School) and captain
Elam Coalson (River Forest, IL/Oak Park & River Forest) all received service plaques for their dedication to the program.
It was a good day to honor the seniors, as Vassar College was able to change the lineups around throughout the day while also seeing some fencers change weapons during some rounds. Vassar knocked off Cornell University (27-0), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (22-5), Drew University (24-3), University of Albany (27-0), Marist College (26-1) and Rochester Institute of Technology (21-6). In fact, Vassar's closest match of the day came against its own "B" team, an 18-9 win for the "A" side.
Starting with the men's foil squad, the Brewers went an impressive 51-3 on the day while winning all nine bouts in five of the seven matches. Sophomore
Tom Racek (Clarks Summit, PA/Abington Heights) upped his seasonal mark to 34-2 with a perfect 18-0 record Sunday, while teammate
Jackson Dammann (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greely) registered 16 wins in his 17 bouts.
Freshman
Michael Skolnick (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) was 14-1 on the day, and
Benjamin Xiong (Andover, MA/Shanghai American School Puxi) went 8-2 as well in foil. In sabre, sophomore
Eli Polston (Silver Spring, MA/Einstein) helped the sabre squad to a 55-8 record Sunday, as he chalked up a 13-0 afternoon.
The senior tandem of Coalson and Wilson combined to go 22-3, and
Campbell Woods (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar) chalked up seven victories as well. Sophomore
Jonathan Alperstein (Fishkill, NY/John Jay), normally one of the team's top epee fencers, moved over to sabre for a round and took all three of his bouts against Marist.
In epee, junior
Ry Farley (Pasadena, CA/Waverly School) was able to capture the win in all 18 of his bouts, improving to 31-3 on the 2015-16 season thus far. Alperstein went 15-3 as well, while classmate
George Whiteside (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) had 15 wins in epee along with one victory in sabre. Polston came over from sabre to fence epee for a few rounds and earned wins in all four of his bouts, while foil fencer Dammann was 2-1 as well in epee.
In maybe the most anticipated match of day featuring the Vassar "A" and "B" sides,
Clayton Marr (Niskayuna, NY/Niskayuna) and
Eric Lee (Fishkill, NY/John Jay) each won two sabre bouts for the "B" squad, while
Tony Varghese (Fair Lawn, NJ/Fair Lawn) earned two epee wins. Riley and sophomore
Daniel Swerzenski (Oak Ridge, NJ/Butler) also both picked up wins against VC in epee in the team grudge match.
The Brewers are off until December 6 at 10 a.m., when they travel to Sacred Heart University to take on some of the best competition in the NCAA. Schedule for the day is still to be announced, but could feature such teams as New York University, Harvard University, Princeton University, Penn State University and Yale University.
