Denman Leads Vassar Women’s Fencing To Five Wins at VC Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 15, 2015) – Sophomore Kirstin Denman (Yellow Springs, OH/Yellow Springs) went 15-3 Sunday afternoon in women's foil, as the Vassar College women's fencing team posted five team victories at the Vassar Invitational held in Walker Field House.

Denman wasted no time getting right into mid-season form, as the sophomore chalked up four matches with an unblemished 3-0 mark. Her efforts helped Vassar go 5-2 on the day, defeating Haverford College (19-8), Queens College (24-3), LIU Post (22-5), University of Florida (17-10) and Fairleigh Dickinson University (20-7). VC's only losses on the day came to national powers Northwestern University (23-4) and Cornell University (23-4).

In the opening match of the day against Haverford the power of the foil team for the Brewers was on display, as Denman went 3-0 and freshman Sophie Blumenstock (St. Paul, MN/Nova Classical Academy) also picked up three wins. Freshman Rose Hulsey-Vincent (Woodinville, WA/Woodinville) added three wins in epee action, while sophomore Annie Innes-Gold (Northampton, MA/Northampton) registered three victories in sabre.

Facing Queen's, the Brewers had no problems as all three weapons posted eight victories. Innes-Gold chalked up three more wins, as did Denman and Miri Rutishauser (New York, NY/LaGuardia School of Music & Art) for the foil squad. Junior Olivia Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA/Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) went 3-0 against Queens, and squad mate Maggie Shepherd (Sausalito, CA/Novato) added two victories.

The Brewers continued the hot start to the day with another resounding win against LIU, as the sabre and foil squads each went 8-1. Sophomore Arianna Hawk (East Northport, NY/Commack) and senior Lily Elbaum (Troy, NY/Ottumwa) both booked three wins for the sabre squad, while Blumenstock and Elsa Stoff (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) each went undefeated during the round.

In the fourth round of the afternoon, the Brewers fought off a tough test by the University of Florida as the foil team was the difference with eight wins. Denman and Rutishauser were unblemished in their three victories for the foil team, and Innes-Gold moved to 11-0 for the day with a 3-0 record in sabre.

In the two losses, the Brewers saw Denman earn a pair of victories against Cornell, while Weiss captured two victories against Northwestern. On the afternoon, Denman and Innes-Gold each finished with a team-best 15 wins, while Hulsey-Vincent and Weiss posted 13 wins to lead the way for the epee squad. Elbaum added 10 victories in sabre, and Rutishauser was 9-4 in limited action.

The Brewers will be back at home next Sunday, hosting the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational at 10 a.m. in Walker Field House.
