POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 15, 2015) – The Vassar College sabre team was electric Sunday afternoon, going 49-14 on the day as the Brewers went 6-1 in action from the Vassar College Invitational in Walker Field House.
The Brewers nearly won all seven matches on the day Sunday, but couldn't overcome a strong performance by Stevens Institute of Technology in men's foil in a 14-13 loss to the Ducks. Vassar earned wins though over Yeshiva University (23-4), Hunter College (21-6), Haverford College (16-11), Lafayette University (19-8), Army (22-5) and the University of Florida (16-11).
The story of the day for the Brewers was the fencing from senior captain
Elam Coalson (Oak Park, IL/River Forest & Oak Park), as he posted wins in 17 of his 18 bouts for the sabre team. Coalson was part of a sabre crew that won all seven squad scores Sunday, including chalking up seven or more bout wins in four of the seven matches.
Against Yeshiva, the Brewers dropped four matches as the sabre and epee teams each went undefeated. Sophomore
George Whiteside (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) and junior
Ry Farley (Pasadena, CA/Waverly School) each went 3-0 in epee, while sophomore
Tom Racek (Clark's Summit, PA/Abington Heights) added two foil victories.
In the second match of the day, VC knocked off Hunter thanks to three more wins from freshman
Michael Skolnick (South Setauket, NY/Ward Melville) in foil. Farley and sophomore
Jonathan Alperstein (Fishkill, NY/John Jay) each chalked up three wins as well. Against Stevens, the 8-1 outing from the sabre squad wasn't enough, but Coalson and sophomore Eli Poston (Silver Spring, MD/Einstein) were both undefeated in three bouts.
Against Haverford College, the Brewers saw the sabre and epee squads register six bout wins, led by Polston and Whiteside with their three victories apiece. Racek chalked up three wins against Lafayette, while sophomore
Daniel Swerzenski (Oak Ridge, NJ/Butler) was perfect in three bouts against Army in epee.
In the final match of the afternoon, VC was able to push past Florida on the strength of seven wins by the sabre team. Coalson finished with three more wins over the Gators, with Racek also tallying three victories in the day's finishing act.
For the day, Polston and Coalson combined to win 32 of their 35 bouts on Sunday in sabre, while Racek went 16-2 on the day in men's foil. Alperstein posted 14 triumphs in men's epee, while Farley added 13 and Whiteside also booked 10 Sunday. The men's foil team was 37-26 for VC on the day, while the men's epee group was a stellar 44-19.
Vassar will be back in Walker Field House this Sunday morning at 10 a.m., hosting Senior Day before the Matt Lampell Hudson Valley Invitational.
