POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 10, 2015) – The Vassar College women's fencing team will look to get its 2015-16 dual match schedule off to a solid start this weekend, as the squad plays host at the 2015 Vassar College Invitational in Walker Field House at 10 a.m. Sunday morning. The Brewers competed at The Big One last Saturday as individuals, and saw several strong performances in the event hosted by Smith College.

A Look At The Brewers- The Vassar College women will have a full slate of action his weekend, as the team hosts seven squads starting at 10 a.m. and finishing around 6:30 p.m.

- Vassar has four young and talented freshmen that will be fencing in Walker Field House in a competitive setting Sunday, including three foil fencers.
- The Brewers have a 19-person squad this year from all over the world, representing 10 states here in the USA as well as two fencers from China and one from Dubai, UAE.
- Vassar brings back its top three fencers from last season, as junior
Olivia Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA/Pennsylvania Cyber Charter), sophomores
Kirsten Denman (Yellow Springs, OH/Yellow Springs) and
Annie Innes-Gold (Northampton, MA/Northampton) return to lead the way.
- Seniors
Maggie Shepherd (Sausalito, CA/Novato) and
Amreen Bhasin (Cresskill, NJ/Riverdale Country School) were named as team captains for the upcoming season by their teammates.
- Last weekend, Weiss finished tied in epee for third at The Big One, an impressive finish out of a field of 64 fencers.
- Innes-Gold was Vassar's lone representative in the top 20 last Saturday at The Big One, as she chalked up a 12
th place finish in the women's sabre.
- VC's women's foil team shined last weekend, posting four fencers in the top 24 competitors, led by
Kirsten Denman and her ninth-place spot.
A Look At The Invitational Field- VC will be hosting more women's teams on Sunday than men's teams, as the Brewers welcome squads from CCNY, Cornell University, Fairleigh Dickinson, the University of Florida, Haverford College, Hunter College, Lafayette College, LIU Post, Northwestern University, Queens College, Sacred Heart University, Stevens Institute of Technology, Tufts University and Wellesley College.
- Walker Field House will feature 30 strips, promising non-stop action all day.
- Northwestern will feature two of the best sabre fencers in the nation this weekend, as Cindy Oh and Alisha Gomez-Shah come to town for the Wildcats. Teammates Jen Yamin and Stephanie Chan also earned spots in the NCAA Championships in the foil, while seniors Juliana Barrett and Helen Foster each were NCAA Finalists last season for NU.
- Sacred Heart, one of Vassar's top rivals, returns Julia Greene in sabre, who earned a spot in the NCAA Championships in the 2014-15 season.
- The Big Red of Cornell will be another team to watch, as CU junior Victoria Wines won the NCAA Northeast Regional last year in the women's epee. Wines finished tied for third nationally at NCAAs. The foil team of Angelica Gangemi and Ediona Sera also earned NCAA spots last year for the Big Red.
- VC went 4-4 last season at the Vassar Invitational, earning wins over Army, Hunter, Haverford and Queens.
