PROVIDENCE, RI (January 24, 2015) -- The Vassar College women's fencing team battled seven Northeast Fencing Conference opponents Saturday afternoon, going 2-5 in action hosted by Brown University.
The Brewers opened the day with a 19-8 loss to the Eagles of Boston College, followed by a 22-5 loss to Brandeis University. The Brewers went 0-3 on the day with a 17-10 loss to Tufts University, but got their first win of the conference season with a 15-12 win over Dartmouth College. VC then fell to host Brown University 22-5, but finished the afternoon with a loss to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (17-10) and win over Smith College (23-4).
The VC foil team earned a squad-best 31 wins on the afternoon, led by the 15-6 record by freshman
Kirsten Denman (Yellow Springs, OH/Yellow Springs). Sophomore
Elsa Stoff (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven) also added 10 wins for the foil squad Saturday.
Sophomore epee fencer
Olivia Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA/Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) went 15-6 on the day, including earning three wins against Dartmouth and Smith College and a pair of victories versus Brandeis, Tufts, Brown and MIT. The sabre team for VC earned 22 wins, led by the 14 victories from freshman
Annie Innes-Gold (Northampton, MA/Northampton).
Innes-Gold earned three wins against MIT, Dartmouth and Smith, while earning two bouts against Boston College and Tufts University. Unfortunately for Innes-Gold, her one loss against Tufts came against sister Sarah Innes-Gold of the Jumbos, as the older sibling avenged a 5-4 loss last week in Poughkeepsie to even the series.
VC will head to Drew University for non-conference action with the Rangers next Saturday, January 31 in Madison, NJ.
