Innes-Gold Dominates As Vassar Splits Eight Matches In Vassar Invitational Sunday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 9, 2014) -- Vassar College freshman sabre fencer Annie Innes-Gold (Northampton, MA/Northampton) finished the day a whopping 21-3, helping the Brewers to four wins at the Vassar College Invitational, hosted by VC in Walker Field House.

The all-day event went off without a hitch Sunday afternoon for the season opener for the Brewers, and the women's squad posted wins over Haverford College, Queens College, Hunter College and Army.

In the first match of the day, the Brewers (4-4) posted an impressive 17-10 victory over the Fords of HC, as the epee squad led the way with an 8-1 round. Junior Rachel Messbauer (Springfield, MA/MacDuffie School) and sophomore Olivia Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA/Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) each posted three wins, while senior Megan Lewis (Charleston, SC/Governor's School) chalked up a pair of victories.

The Brewers also got three wins against Haverford from freshman foilist Kirsten Denman (Yellow Springs, OH/Yellow Springs) and sophomore foil captain Elsa Stoff (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson-Fair Haven). VC picked up its second win of the day in round two, knocking off Queens 21-6 as the sabre team won eight bouts.

Vassar dropped a 16-11 decision to Sacred Heart University in round three, but Innes-Gold was a perfect 3-0, and the foil squad earned a 5-4 win thanks to a 3-0 round from Denman. The Brewers regrouped and picked up a 22-5 win over Hunter College, as sabre and epee each posted eight wins apiece.

Against Hunter, Innes-Gold registered three victories, while squad teammate and team captain Anastasia Stevens (Peterborough, NH/Contoocook Valley Regional) added three wins as well. Weiss, Messbauer and Lewis all were 2-0 as well in the match with Hunter in epee.

The Brewers would fall to Cornell University in the next contest, as the Big Red came into the match ranked No.13 in the final CollegeFencing360.com Coaches Poll of 2013-14. Still, Innes-Gold shined with a pair of wins for Vassar.

Vassar College dropped its sixth-round matchup with Stevens 15-12, but the sabre squad earned another squad victory, as Innes-Gold tallied three more victories for the Brewers. Denman chalked up a pair of wins against the Ducks, and Messbauer also took two epee bouts for Vassar in round six.

Another hard-fought match would go against the Brewers in the penultimate test of the afternoon, as Fairleigh Dickinson University edged Vassar 15-12. The Vassar epee team was 6-3 against the Knights, as Lewis and Weiss notched two victories. FDU would control foil, despite Denman's two wins, which helped the Knights to the win. Innes-Gold added another pair of wins as well for the Brewers in sabre.

The final match of the day would go to the host Brewers, as Vassar College breezed by Army, 20-7. Innes-Gold completed her phenomenal day with three more wins, and Stevens helped earn the squad win with two more triumphs. Foil dominated the Black Knights 8-1, as Denman and Stoff each went 3-0, while epee posted its fifth win of the day on the strength of three wins from Weiss, as well as a pair of victories each by Lewis and Messbauer.

On the afternoon, the epee squad led the way for the Brewers, going a combined 44-28, while sabre chalked up a 40-32 day and the foil team evened out at 36-36. Innes-Gold's 21 wins were the most for the Brewers Sunday, but fellow freshman Denman wasn't too far behind with 18. Weiss led the epee group with a 15-5 overall record, and Lewis and Messbauer each had 12 wins apiece.

The Brewers will be back in action next Sunday at 11 a.m., as they host the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational in Walker Field House.
