Box Score POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 25, 2014) – The Vassar College women's basketball team forced Wesleyan University into 19.7 percent shooting, chalking up its third straight win with a 64-39 win over the Cardinals in non-conference action from the Athletics and Fitness Center Tuesday.
Junior
Caitlin Drakeley (Nonnewaug, CT/Woodbury) continued her inspired play of late, as the guard posted a big double-double, going for 20 points and a career and game-high 15 rebounds. Drakeley was big in a first half that didn't see much scoring, as the Brewers led 26-15 at the break. Drakeley chalked up nine points in the opening half.
During the opening stanza, both teams struggled from the floor, as the score was knotted at eight with 12:39 to play in the opening half. VC scored the next seven points, capped by a lay-up from
Colleen O'Connell (Maywood, NJ/Immaculate Heart Academy). WU (2-3) trimmed the lead to two at 15-13, but the Brewers rattled off an 11-2 run to end the half.
After the intermission, the Cardinals got as close as 33-25 on a three-pointer by Maeve Vitale, but VC put together a 11-0 spurt over the next 4:44 to take a 19-point advantage at 44-25. The Brewer lead swelled up to as much as 27 after a pair of free throws by
Ariella Rosenthal (Mill Valley, CA/Redwood), finishing with a 25-point final margin of victory.
Drakeley was 9-of-16 from the floor, dishing out four assists while playing 40 minutes on the night. The junior now has two double-doubles this season, and has netted 20 or more points in four straight games. The four straight games with 20 or more points is the first time a Brewer player has done that since last season, when
Cydni Matsuoka accomplished the feat for five straight games.
Sophomore forward
Zoe Walker (Seattle, WA/Lakeside School) posted career-highs of both eight points and 10 rebounds, adding a game-high four blocks as well. All seven players that played for the Brewers notched at least five points, as freshman
Samarah Cook (Redding, CT/Joel Barlow) scored a career-high nine points as well.
Senior
Allyson Pemberton (Weston, MA/Weston) finished with six points and six boards, while O'Connell capped her performance with six points, eight rebounds and two rejections. The Brewers shot 31.8 percent (21-66) from the field Tuesday evening, going 21-of-27 (77.8 percent) from the charity stripe.
The Brewers also posted a huge edge on the glass, outrebounding the much larger Cardinal team 63-47 on the night. The 63 caroms were the most since grabbing 65 last year in a win over St. Joseph's of Long Island on December 4, 2013. Tuesday was also the lowest an opposing team has shot percentage-wise since holding Elmira College to 19.6 percent shooting back on December 10, 2011.
Wesleyan was paced by the double-doubles from by Brenna Diggins and Jess Cherenza, as Diggins posted 13 points and 12 rebounds and Cherenza added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Both double-doubles came on 4-of-15 shooting, as no other Cardinal added more than four points on the night.
Vassar College is off for a week before heading back on the road to take on the Knights of Mount Saint Mary College December 2 at 6 p.m. in Newburgh, NY.
