Vassar Women Earn Lampell Invitational Title Sunday

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 16, 2014) -- The Vassar College women's fencing team won all six matches Sunday, earning the team title at the 2014 Matt Lampell Hudson Valley Invitational in action from Walker Field House.

On the afternoon, which ended with a presentation of the championship plaque from Matt Lampell himself, the Brewers dominated in five of the six matches, with the deciding tussle coming with City College of New York. Lampell, a former Vassar fencing coach who was in attendence with his wife Muriel, celebrated his 90th birthday Saturday and was serenaded to a rendition of The Birthday Song at the conclusion of the event.

In that affair with the Beavers, the sabre team was huge for the Brewers, as the group went 6-3 to offset the 5-4 losses in epee and foil. Freshman Annie Innes-Gold (Northampton, MA/Northampton) was great against CCNY, going 3-0 while team captain Anastasia Stevens (Peterborough, NH/Contooncook Valley Regional) was 2-1. Thanks to the sabre squad, Vassar was able to come away with the 14-13 win.

In the other five matches, the Brewers (10-4) combined to go a combined 115-20 in wins over Queens College (19-8), Marist College (23-4), LIU Post (25-2), Army (23-4) and Yeshiva University (25-2).

Innes-Gold led Vassar for the second straight weekend in victories, as she went 18-0, while sabre teammates Stevens and Kathleen Konno (Newburgh, NY/Lady of Lourdes) each had 15 wins on the day. In foil, sophomore Elsa Stoff (Fair Haven, NJ/Runson-Fair Haven) was an impressive 16-1 for the Brewers, while freshman squadmate Kirsten Denman (Yellow Springs, OH/Yellow Springs) chalked up a 14-1 record Sunday.

The epee group was a very solid 41-13 for Vassar, as junior Rachel Messbauer (Springfield, MA/MacDuffie School) earned 11 wins and sophomore Olivia Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA/Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) racked up a squad-leading 14 triumphs.

CCNY finished second as a team Sunday afternoon, while the Army women took third place. The team championship for the Brewers is the fifth over the six-year event, with CCNY capturing the team win last season.

The Brewers are off for a couple of weeks before returning to action December 7 at the Sacred Heart Tournament.
