POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 16, 2014) -- With former coach Matt Lampell on hand to watch the festivities, the Vassar College men's fencing squad cruised to a team title at the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational Sunday afternoon in Walker Field House.
Vassar College (10-2) captured five wins to pick up the championship, as VC earned the sixth Matt Lampell Invitational title in the tournament's sixth time being held. The Brewers started the afternoon with a 25-2 win over Cornell, followed by a 21-6 victory over Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. The Brewers then knocked off the University of Albany (25-2), Marist College (27-0) and Army (18-9) to secure the championship. Following the tournament, Lampell and wife Muriel helped present the team awards. Lampell, who turned 90 in the last few days, was honored with the singing of The Birthday Song. Army finished second on the day, while RPI earned third place.Â
The Brewer top squad on Sunday was the sabre team, as Vassar went 41-4 in the weapon. Freshman
Eli Polston (Silver Spring, MD/Einstein) and junior captain
Elam Coalson (River Forest, IL/Oak Park & River Forest) each were impressive with a 14-1 record for VC, while
Zachary Wilson (Rochester, NY/Allendale Columbia School) was an unblemished 12-0 on the day. Sophomore
Campbell Woods (Newport Beach, CA/Corona Del Mar) also picked up seven victories for the sabre squad.Â
In foil, the team went 36-9 on the day, led by the 13 wins apiece from senior captain
Tre Artis (Jamaica, NY/Benjamin Cardozo) and freshman
Tom Racek (Clark's Summit, PA/Abington Heights). Sophomore
Jackson Dammann (Chappaqua, NY/Horace Greeley) also chipped in with 10 wins, as the foil group won all five matches in the weapon.Â
The Vassar College epee group went 39-6 on the day, earning at least seven wins in all five matches, including sweeping all nine bouts against Marist and winning eight in victories over Albany and Army. Freshman
Jonathan Alperstein (Fishkill, NY/John Jay) upped his season record to 30-5 with a 15-0 day Sunday, while epee teammates
Ry Farley (Pasadena, CA/Waverly School) and
George Whiteside (Fairfield, CT/Fairfield Ludlowe) each went 12-3 on the afternoon. The epee team now has 82 wins on the year, second among team weapon groups behind the 87 from the sabre squad.Â
Vassar will return to action December 7 in Fairfield, CT at the Sacred Heart Invitational.Â
