CHESTNUT HILL, MA (January 25, 2014) -- The Vassar College women's fencing team battled a very strong field at the Boston College Invitational Saturday afternoon, going 1-5 on the day. The Brewers rebounded from falling in the first five matches of the afternoon to capture an emphatic 18-9 win over Smith College in the day's finale.
In the Brewers' loss to MIT, the foil group had a solid showing going 5-4, while the epee team was 7-2.
Elsa Stoff and
Claudia Carcamo were each 2-1, while
Megan Lewis was a perfect 3-0 in epee. Fellow epee fencers
Olivia Weiss and
Rachel Messbauer were 2-1.
Against host Boston College, Stoff was stellar with a 3-0 mark, while
Lily Elbaum picked up a victory as well in sabre. Vassar barely dropped its match with Tufts, falling 16-11, as Stoff was 2-1 in foil. Weiss and Messbauer were a combined 6-0 as well against the Jumbos.
Weiss added three more wins against Brandeis, as the squad fell 19-8, but Messbauer was again successful with two victories in epee. Stoff also chalked up to bout wins against Brandies. In the next match with Brown, the Bears knocked off VC 21-6, but Weiss stayed hot with another 3-0 performance.
The Brewers finished the day with an 18-9 win over Smith College, as the epee team went 8-1. Weiss finished with another spotless match, going 3-0 while winning her final 12 matches of the day. Lewis was 2-1, and
Noelle Sawyer finished with two wins as well.
Stoff and Carcamo were each able to pick up three wins in foil to end the afternoon, and Elbaum added two victories as well in the triumph over the Pioneers. All in all, Weiss was fantastic with a 14-3 mark on the day. Messbauer picked up eight total wins, and Lewis finished with seven as well.
Stoff led the foilists with a 13-5 record, winning at least one bout in every match, and Carcamo also chalked up seven wins.
VC will head to New Haven, CT to battle Yale University and Drew University next Saturday, February 1.
