POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 18, 2014) -- The Vassar College women's fencing team traveled to Cleveland, Ohio Saturday for the Cleveland State University Invitational, earning four wins in six matches.

VC knocked off host Cleveland State 19-8 in the opening match of the day, before earning a 17-10 victory over Detroit-Mercy. The Brewers fell to Wayne State University 16-11, but bounced back to earn a 20-7 win over Case Western Reserve and an 18-9 triumph over the University of Florida. In the final match of the day, the University of Michigan snuck by Vassar 14-13.
The Vassar women opened the day with win over CSU, as
Lily Elbaum was 3-0 in sabre, while
Elsa Stoff was 3-0 in foil as well. The women's epee continued to be a huge strength, as
Olivia Weiss,
Megan Lewis and
Noelle Sawyer were all 3-0.
Later in the day, a great performance out of the foil team helped the Brewers earn a seven-bout win over Detroit. The foil squad went a perfect 9-0, as Stoff,
Claudia Carcamo and
Catrina Tellez each won all three matches against the Titans. Sawyer added three more wins as well for VC.
Wayne State knocked off the Brewers in the third match of the day, but
Audrey Aller earned three wins in sabre, and Weiss and Lewis were 2-1 in epee. Vassar responded with an emphatic win against Case Western, as the epee group was perfect in their nine bouts.
Vassar would put together another solid win over Florida, as Stoff was 3-0 again in foil, and Weiss added three more victories. VC finished the day with a narrow loss to Michigan, but Weiss ended her superb afternoon with a 3-0 mark against the Wolverines. Stoff posted three more victories, and Lewis and Carcamo each were 2-1 against UM.
Weiss was amazing all for the Brewers, as she finished 16-2 in epee to up her record to 44-19. Not to be outdone was Stoff, who chalked up a 14-2 record to pad her overall mark to 54-19. Lewis was 13-5 on the afternoon, and Carcamo chalked up 10 wins. Sawyer was 9-6 in epee, and Elbaum added nine wins as well for the Brewers.
Vassar will return to action next Saturday in Boston, MA as it competes in the Boston College Invitational.
