Late Game Scoring Leads Stevens Past Vassar Baseball, 5-3

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (April 17, 2013) – The Vassar College baseball team gave up three ninth-inning runs to Stevens Institute of Technology, falling 5-3 in non-conference play on Wednesday evening at Prentiss Field.

The duo of sophomore left fielder, Kyle Casey, and senior short stop, Mike Perrone, gave Vassar their three-run lead in the bottom of the second. Casey singled to second base and sent junior designated hitter, Parker Werline home. During the next at-bat, Perrone singled off a bunt to score freshman catcher, Dakota Sagnelli.

The Brewers fall to 10-12-1 overall. They will next travel to Skidmore College on Saturday, April 20 at noon for a Liberty League double-header. Stevens advances to 16-14 and will next travel to Bronx, NY for a single game against Lehman College on April 19 for a 4:00 pm Friday game.

Junior first baseman, Brett Zaziski singled to left field in the bottom of the first and advanced Perrone across home plate for the 1-0 Vassar lead.

Dan Allen got things started for the Ducks in the top of the fifth inning. He grounded to sophomore third baseman, Jason Garfinkel, who assisted the out to junior second baseman, Dave Robbins on a fielder's choice. Despite getting Gregg Nickels out at second, Allen got to first base while Marc Calleo scored Steven's first run of the game.

Calleo got the Ducks within one run in the top of the sixth with an RBI single to right field. He drove in Ryan Mannello for the run.

Michael Donovan hist a single to left field in the top of the ninth and took the lead, 4-3 in favor of Stevens when Thomas Sheridan and Jayson Yano crossed home. The Ducks added one more run when a wild pitch from freshman Cameron Hood sent Donovan to third and Allen home for the 5-3 lead.

Mark Poinsett picked up his first win of the season while pitching just 2.1 innings. He struck out two Brewer batters while giving up no hits or walks. After playing eight innings in center field, freshman Nick Johnson received the loss, giving up no hits but crediting himself with three earned runs off three walks and one intentional walk.

Calleo had the best batting average for the Ducks, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, run and a walk. Both nickels and Brian Hennelly had doubles in today's game. Both Sagnelli and Casey went 2-for-4 for the Brewers. Sagnelli picked up a run while Casey had an RBI.

Zaziski went 3-for-5 for the Brewers with an RBI. He and Perrone, Sagnelli and senior right fielder, Sean Morash all had doubles on the day.
