Vassar Women's Fencing Wins Two In Matt Lampell Hudson River Invite

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (November 16, 2013) -- Walker Field House was the site for the Matt Lampell Hudson River Invitational Saturday, with the women's fencing squad going 2-2 on the afternoon.

The Brewers (5-7) started the day with a 18-9 loss to City College of New York. In that match, the Brewer's got strong contributions from sophomore Rachel Messbauer (Springfield, MA/MacDuffie School), who earned two wins in epee. Foil also saw Claudia Carcamo (Clifton, NJ/Monclair Kimberly Academy) and Elsa Stoff (Fair Haven, NJ/Rumson Fair Haven) pick up two bout victories.

Vassar would respond following the loss to CCNY with a 21-6 win over Queens College. The sabre trio of Kathleen Konno (Newburgh, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes), Anastasia Stevens (Peterbourough, NH/Contoocook Valley Regional) and Lily Elbaum (Troy, NY/Ottumwa) each went 2-0, while Megan Lewis (Charleston, SC/Governor's School) picked up two wins.

Stoff and Carcamo again were undefeated in foil, helping the Brewers to the match win. Vassar followed that up with a 23-4 win over Marist. Konno was 3-0 against Marist in sabre, and Stoff and Carcamo keeped their record unblemished with a pair of 2-0 performances. Freshman Olivia Weiss (Pittsburgh, PA/Pennsylvania Cyber Charter) and Lewis were each 3-0, and Noelle Sawyer (Nassau, Bahamas/St. John's College) was 2-1.

In a rematch of the first match of the day, the Brewers battled CCNY again but could not exact revenge as the Brewers were felled, 16-11. Vassar did well in epee, as Weiss earned three wins, and Messbauer collected two bout wins. Stoff upped her stellar season record to 27-6 with three more wins, but a 1-8 showing in sabre lifted CCNY to the win.

On the day, Stoff was 9-1, while Weiss went 7-2 and Lewis was 6-3. Sawyer had some very exciting bouts in epee, winning in overtime on a pair of occassions. Carcamo pushed her season record to 17-14 thanks to a 7-3 mark Saturday, while Konno led the sabre team with six wins.

Vassar will now head to the Sacred Heart Tournament, December 8 at 10 a.m. in Fairfield, CT.
