PROVIDENCE, RI (January 26, 2013) -- The Vassar Women's fencing team met some stiff competition at the Northeast Fencing Conference Match #2 held at Brown University on Saturday. The Brewers went 1-5 on the day with the only team victory 19-8 over Smith. The women's foil squad did have a solid meet, however, posting squad victories over Tufts, Boston College, and MIT.
Individual performers of note were co-captain
Katie LeClair in foil with a 14-4 record, fellow foilist
Anastasia Stevens at 5-4, and co-captain
Caitlin Clevenger at 9-6.
Vassar 19, Smith 8
The foil squad got off to a slow start at 4-5, but epee rolled at 8-1 with
Megan Lewis at 3-0 on the round. Clevenger and
Rachel Messbauer were 2-0. Sabre was 7-2 with
Jillian Josimovich at 3-0.
Tracy Bratt was 2-0.
Vassar 5, Brown 22
This was a tough match for Vassar. Sabre managed three wins – one each for Bratt, Josimovich, and
Kathleen Konno. Epee had the other two victories – one each for Clevenger and Messbauer. Foil was blanked by a tenacious Brown squad.
Vassar 11, Tufts 16
Tufts sabre squad has been getting stronger over the past couple of years. Today they dominated the Vassar squads 9-0. Vassar epee went 5-4 with two wins each for Clevenger and Messbauer and one for Maggie Smith. Vassar foil managed a 6-3 squad win with LeClair and Stevens both undefeated at 3-0, but that was just not enough to overcome the deficit.
Vassar 8, Boston College 19
Vassar foil pulled out at 5-4 squad victory behind great performances by LeClair at 3-0, and
Katharine Sweeney at 2-1. Unfortunately, epee had a tough round at 3-6 and sabre was blanked again at 0-9.
Vassar 9, MIT 18
Foil had another banner round, going 6-3 behind Leclair undefeated at 3-0 and Stevens at 2-1. Sabre had another poor round at 0-9 and epee only managed three wins – two by Clevenger and one from Messbauer,
Vassar 6 Brandeis 21
Vassar was pretty tired in round six. LeClair was on her game at 2-1, but the only other foil victory came from Sweeney going 1-1 that round. Sabre came alive with Konno and Bratt each coming off the matt for a victory to end the day.
Megan Lewis had the only epee win.
The Vassar women next compete at home in the Kenyon Gym on Saturday, February 2. That match is Senior Day, and the Brewers will be facing Yale, Drew, Queens, and Hunter starting at 1:00 p.m.
