Strong Offensive Second Half Leads RPI Past Field Hockey, 6-1

POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (September 26, 2012) – Holding a 2-1 lead at halftime, the Rensselaer field hockey team exploded with four second half goals – three coming in just under a nine minute span – to hand Vassar College a 6-1 loss in Liberty League action on Wednesday afternoon under cloudy conditions at Weinberg Field.

The Engineers, who outshot the Brewers 25-14, got goals from five different players, including two from senior midfielder Holly Dupuis. Leading 3-1 at the 41 minute mark, RPI scored three more times starting at the 58 minute mark to put the game out of reach.

The loss drops Vassar to 4-4, 0-3 in the Liberty League. RPI improves to 5-2, 1-1. Vassar returns to action on Saturday with a home game against Morrisville at 1:00 p.m. RPI hosts Rowan at Noon on Saturday.

Though RPI played the majority of the first half in the Vassar end, earning nine penalty corners, the Brewers were able to even the contest at 1-1 when junior midfielder Cameron Felt scored her second goal of the season on a tip-in shot that came was assisted by sophomore forward Dara Davis at the 25 minute mark. It came 15 minutes after Dupuis scored the game's first goal on her own tip-in shot in front of a crowded Vassar goal.

RPI went into halftime leading 2-1 after Dupuis assisted on a goal that skipped past the Vassar defense by sophomore attack Liana Viaggio with four minutes until intermission.

Following the break, the Engineers mounted considerable offensive pressure deep in the Vassar zone. Starting at the 41 minute mark, RPI scored four straight goals, coming off the sticks of senior attack Alissa Peterson, Dupuis, freshman attack Ashley Clough and sophomore attack Catherine Mahoney, both of whom scored their first goals of the season.

The Brewers had a few worthy offensive opportunities. In the first half freshman Bianca Zarrella was stopped on an open field breakaway by RPI sophomore goalie Hannah Clough. In the second half Clough negated a scoring strike from Vassar junior midfielder Anna Schroeder. Clough had six saves in the contest.
