Field Hockey's Comeback Falls Just Short in Double Overtime Thriller Against SUNY Geneseo

Vassar scored the tying goal in regulation with less than a second remaining, fall in double overtime

Poughkeepsie, NY - The Vassar College Field Hockey team fell just short in its home opener on Sunday afternoon at Weinberg Field as the Brewers dropped a 3-2 double overtime thriller against SUNY Geneseo. Vassar's record moves to 1-1 on the season while the Knights stay undefeated at 3-0 overall.

How It Happened
  • Vassar opened the scoring five and a half minutes into the first quarter as the Brewers earned a penalty stroke and sophomore Sydney Yu powered it past the goalkeeper to take an early 1-0 lead.
  • Following a scoreless second quarter, Geneseo found the equalizer off a corner as Aubree Wenner tallied her third goal of the season off an insert from Kyra Giannelli with five minutes left in the third period.
  • The Knights went ahead 2-1 with just over four minutes left in regulation off another corner with Ava Harman scoring this time off another Giannelli insert.
  • With time running out in regulation, Vassar pushed the ball ahead and found the stick of sophomore Remy Phan, who knocked the ball forward to sophomore Julia Morris for her first goal of the season with less than a second remaining to extend the game to overtime.
  • Senior goalkeeper Grace Wiley made two big saves in the first overtime period as the senior made a breakaway save on Ella Greico with seven minutes left in OT and then made a second save on Greico at the overtime horn.
  • Geneseo scored the game-winner just over two minutes into the second overtime period as Lauren Rey found a breakaway opportunity and potted her second goal of the season to earn a thrilling 3-2 win for the Knights.
For The Brewers
  • Yu notched her second goal of the season along with Morris scoring her first goal of the 2026 campaign.
  • Phan picked up her first assist of her Vassar career while junior Mackenzie Allen registered five shots and sophomore Sophia Jammar recorded four shots.
  • Wiley took the loss in net and made three saves for the Brewers.
For The Knights
  • Wenner, Harman and Rey each scored a goal for Geneseo while Giannelli posted two assists.
  • Wenner also recorded a defensive save along with Bridget Schafer earning the win in goal after making four stops.
Game Statistics
  • Vassar outshot Geneseo 17-13 on the contest and held a slim 7-6 edge in shots on target.
  • The Brewers also held a narrow 8-7 advantage in penalty corners.
